TROWBRIDGE claimed just a second win of the WEPL Premier Two Glos/Wilts season at the weekend – and picked up local bragging rights in the process after a three-wicket triumph at Westbury.

After losing the toss, Trowbridge captain Tom Weaver admitted he was anticipating a long afternoon in the field, so was delighted that his side were able to keep their hosts to 196-8 at the conclusion of their 50 overs.

Mike Reynolds led the Trowbridge attack with 4-18 as Richard Mills top scored for Westbury.

Early wickets for Andy Carroll (3-21) looked to have the visitors in trouble in reply but Billy Cookson (49) steadied the ship before Harry Veal (52 not out) and Scott Mitchell shared an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 75 to see Trowbridge over the winning line, finishing on 200-7 in the 47th over.

Trowbridge captain Weaver said: “It was a great win considering we lost the toss.

“We thought whoever won the toss would bat and put a big score on the board, and then the second innings would be a tough run chase.

“I am really pleased with the bowlers at how we managed to keep them down to below 200, and they were backed up really well in the field. We got two run-outs too, which we pride ourselves on.

“It was a good knock from Billy Cookson. It was nice to see him get some runs.

“He has moved down to number five and it gives a lot more stability to our middle order, and Harry Veal was brilliant with both the bat and the ball.

“He was outstanding all afternoon and led us home in the end.

“Credit to Scott Mitchell too, for him and Harry to put on 70-odd for the eighth wicket was a brilliant effort.

“The wins pulls us clear of the bottom two in the table, and hopefully it is the kick-start for our season.

“We needed it, and it is great to do it in a local derby too.”

Elsewhere, four wickets from Joe King helped Corsham claim a third victory on the spin with a two-wicket triumph at home to Biddestone.

Tyrone Isitt had actually made a brilliant 102 for the visitors after they had won the toss and elected to bat first.

With support from opener Dwaine Perry (65) Biddestone were able to post 231-9 as King took 4-46.

However, Tom Foley’s Corsham mounted a successful run chase as Adam Mitchell (70), Tom Smith (55) and Tom Abbott (39 not out) saw them to a winning 235-8 with seven balls to spare.
