WARMINSTER Town’s U16s squad earned national glory when beating University of Nottingham in a thrilling 4-3 final at the English U16s National Futsal Championships in Birmingham.

Following their success at the South-West Championships, Warminster made the trip north to face the top 10 teams in the country.

The 10 teams were split into two groups of five – Warminster were arguably drawn in the tougher group with Manchester and Birmingham also featuring.

Despite this, Warminster showed great determination to defeat Manchester 4-1 in their opening group game, largely thanks to Jake Wright’s faultless hat-trick.

Notley High School provided Warminster with a scare when taking a 2-0 lad within five minutes, but a calm performance saw Warminster fight back to win 4-2.

Warminster fell behind again in their third group stage game when Birmingham took the early lead.

Some outstanding goalkeeping from Liam Ashman allowed Max Pollack and Jake Wright to exploit Birmingham’s defensive weaknesses to add a goal each – ensuring Warminster won 2-1.

A final group stage win against Woodbury FC saw Warminster run out 3-0 winners with goals for Oli Pease, Jake Small and another from Jake Wright.

Full on confidence after topping the group, Warminster had to work hard in their semi-final to defeat Were FC.

A Jake Small double guided Warminster’s youngsters to a thrilling 5-4 win and a place in the National Final at the first attempt.

The final, against the University of Nottingham, saw Warminster take an early lead when Jake Small’s toe punt caught the keeper flat footed.

Nottingham stormed back with two well-worked goals to go 2-1 ahead before Jake Wright levelled to make it 2-2.

Nottingham retook the lead once more after a quality strike defeated Liam Ashman before Jake Small’s individual goal made it 3-3.

The match-winning goal was left to Warminster hero Jake Wright, whose one-on-one effort left the keeper scrambling in defeat.
