WEIGHTS were well down in the Landsend Fishery Christmas match held in poor weather conditions but it made the event more exciting with little between the leading anglers.
Top honours on the day went to Mosella star Tony Rixon who sneaked first prize with a mixed bag of carp and skimmers weighing 34lb 14oz, taken on pole-fished red maggots. Right on his heels came Steve Seagar, of Maver Veals, with another carp and skimmer catch weighing 34lb 11oz, taken on pole-fished red maggots. Dean Malin, of Dynamite Baits, clinched third prize with a mixed bag weighing 31lb, with Dave Avery, of Landsend, a close fourth with a mixed catch weighing 30lb 7oz.
THE Viaduct open Christmas match produced mixed sport after competitors had to break the ice to be able to fish.
John Gray, of Fox Match, left the rest of the field well in his wake with an all-carp catch weighing 102lb 11oz, taken on waggler-fished red maggots. Mervyn Hull, of Langport AA, was a distant runner-up with another all-carp catch weighing 56lb 6oz, taken on straight lead fished sweetcorn.
Roland Lucas, of Frome Haines AC, clinched third prize with a carp catch weighing 54lb 3oz, taken on pole-fished sweetcorn.
The silver fish prize went to John Oakey, of Warminster, with a mainly skimmer catch weighing 27lb 3oz, taken on pole-fished red maggots.
Other placings: 4 Mark Cardwell, Viaduct, 49lb 12oz; 5 Steve Spike, Viaduct, 45lb 12oz; 6 Graham Perkins, Viaduct, 42lb 4oz.
