TROWBRIDGE Rangers (Sunday), one of six new sides to Division Four, faced fellow newcomers Oakhill on the opening day of what could be a good season for James Goddard’s side if their 3-1 success is anything to go by.

Alan Woodward put Oakhill ahead with a great finish from 20 yards only for Matt Cameron to get Rangers back on level terms. Patrick Kapelka handed Rangers the lead prior to half time.

The second period saw Oakhill on top for long periods but they were unable to make a breakthrough and they were hit with the sucker punch when player-manager Goddard scored the third and killer goal for his Rangers side which wrapped up victory in a game well refereed by Melvin Sullivan.

Melksham Cosmos 2 Trowbridge Town Supporters Club 1

MATTHEW Bowden’s Melksham Cosmos side tasted victory in their first-ever league game against an experienced Trowbridge Town Supporters Club at Goatacre but they had to fight hard to claim their 2-1 triumph.

After a difficult pre season, Cosmos were ahead within 15 minutes after Joe Griffiths and Marc Scammell headed on a Jason Hull long throw, and Marc Bowden made a trademark late run into the box to finish neatly into the top left hand corner.

Both teams had chances during the first half, with Town’s Dean Coles hitting the bar, however good defensive work from both teams keep the score at 1-0 at the break.

Cosmos started the second half well and created a couple of openings to try to extend their lead.

The second goal finally came when a through ball over the top from centre back Will Raikes-May left Jason Hull one on one with the Town defender, with Hull outpacing him to power in Cosmos second.

Cosmos made some changes with 30 minutes to go, as Chris Berelli came on for Marc Bowden and Matt Brock for James Muspratt.

Both teams continued to threaten, with Matthew Bowden coming on for Matt Clements with 20 minutes to go.

Cosmos defended well in the last 15 minutes as Town tried to regain a foothold in the match, and in the dying minutes they were given a penalty when Lewis Taylor was judged to have brought down Stuart Little, who had earlier hit the post but got up to despatch the penalty.

But it was too little too late as the Cosmos were able to breath easy and hold on for their first taste of victory as a club.

Pig & Whistle United B 0 Old Road FC 7

OLD Road FC who as Spartans FC finished bottom of the pile last season began the new campaign with an impressive 7-0 victory at league newcomers Pig & Whistle United B who, after playing a year of friendlies before joining the league had been tipped to do well.

Nathan Dunford was the star of the show for Old Road scoring three of their seven, Dunford’s first gave the Chippenham side an early advantage which was quickly doubled by Dan Stevens.

Dean Archer added number three before Dunford scored his second of the game for 4-0. Jamie Smith completed the first-half scoring with Old Road’s fifth of the morning.

Old Road’s Dunford completed his hat-trick early in the second half when he made it 6-0 and it was left to Marc Purcell to finish things off with his teams seventh of a profitable morning.

Sportzcoach Dragons United 4 Crossblades FC 2

VISITORS Crossblades went in to this fixture with many key players missing and full of nerves against a Sportzcoach Dragonz United outfit who, with many new signings, are regarded as promotion candidates.

It was Dragonz who came out on top winning 4-2. The game started brightly for Sportzcoach with captain Liam Richards pulling all the strings in the centre of the park.

Chances were limited to a few potshots from Sportzcoach but the Blades struggled to get out their own half. Great defensive work from Tayler Worthy kept Sportzcoach at bay for much of the half.

Against the run of play it was Crossblades who took the lead after some neat interchanges between Tim Chilton and Ben Owers.

Chilton fed Owers down the right wing and his cross caused confusion in the Sportcoach defence, Carl Gilbert took advantage and smashed the ball home from eight yards.

This spurred Sportzcoach on, and along with some encouragement from Ben Aldridge on the touchline, it wasn't long before the scores were level, Paul Walker restoring parity.

Crossblades were immediately on the back foot in the second half, with it seeming only a matter of time before a goal was conceded.

Despite continuing good defensive work from Worthy and Matthews, Sportzcoach scored goals in quick succession via Alex Shaftoe and Tom Smith and began to control the game well with Richards putting in an outstanding performance.

Once again and against the run of play, Crossblades pulled a goal back from out of no where.

A free kick from Chilton heading goal-wards was helped on by Shaftoe and brought the Blades to within a goal close to an unlikely draw.

Soon after though, Sportzcoach put the game to bed when Matthew Service made it 4-2 and a deserved victory against a Blades team that battled hard until the final whistle.

Worton & Cheverell (Sunday) 0 FC North Wiltshire 9

WORTON & Cheverell fell victim of a sublime first-half performance from FC North Wiltshire, who started off the campaign with a fine win.

North Wilts were full of running through the middle throughout the first half, and it was only a matter of minutes before new signing Scott Lye was through to the keeper, and calmly placed the ball low to the corner after being slotted in from the midfield.

It was midfield dominance that really paid for North Wilts, who time and time again won their midfield duals.

By half time it was 6-0 thanks to further goals from Dan Deacon (two), Dan Gilbert (two), and Paul Colegate, who rifled a ball to the left hand corner from the edge of the right hand area.

In the second half, there was more of the same from North Wilts. Lye soon grabbed the match ball with firstly a sublime shot from outside the area with his left foot, and then with a volley from 12 yards.

But it was man of the match James Bamford who got the last goal, as he powered through from a corner to tuck the ball in from close range.

Bamford dominated midfield throughout the game, and his physical presence meant that there was no way through for the league newcomers.

The game was played in a great spirit, with the referee Gareth Gibbs having an excellent game.
