TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE DIVISION ONE: Boomsbury open up early lead at the summit

A THIRD successive home game for Boomsbury yielded another victory and three more points for Ben Howe’s side -but the early pacesetters’ were made to work a lot than they would have expected to by a battling Bradford United, who frustrated their hosts for 55 minutes before losing out 3-0.

Boomsbury came up against a stubborn Bradford defence in the first half and had Bradford a half decent striker they may have taken the lead.

But, like their previous two games, they missed chances were too prove costly.

Boomsbury took the lead on 55 minutes when Carl Davies played the ball to substitute and debutant Dave Appleyard who finished well to give the hosts the lead.

It took Boomsbury just three minutes to score a second with Reuben Spong doubling his side's lead.

A second from Spong, 15 minutes from time sealed victory for Boomsbury who, on their early-season showing, are definitely the team to beat this campaign.

Freshford United 2 Semington Magpies 1

AFTER picking up just one point from their opening two matches, Freshford United knew that they would have to do a lot better when Semington Magpies visited Brown’s Park.

Freshford got the win they were after, but their 2-1 success should have been a lot more comfortable than it was.

Hughie Fulton’s side dominated the first half but for all their chances they went in one goal to the good at the break thanks to a Steve Roddy goal.

Semington were much improved after the interval and after good work from Kelvin Lockwood they fashioned an equaliser which was scored by Adam Petty.

Semington then got themselves on top and only a couple of fine saves from keeper Chris Birleson kept the scores level.

The visitors continued to push forward looking for a second goal but hey hut with the classic sucker punch which Freshford retake the lead thanks to a second of the afternoon from Roddy.

After the goal the home team took charge of things and comfortably saw the game out to claim their first win of the season. 

Referee David Harding had an excellent game in the middle.

Melksham Town Reserves 4 Castle Combe 0

CASTLE Combe can’t seem to buy a point at the moment

The villagers, who have yet to get going this term, suffered a 4-0 reverse at Melksham Town Reserves and their third straight defeat leaves Paul Sanderson’s side at the bottom of the table.   

Still on the road to recovery after breaking his leg last season, Nick Ridout put Melksham ahead and Jamie Broom doubled their advantage before half time.

Further goals from Emilio Menghini and a second from Ridout ensured Melksham picked up their second win from their two outings to date.   

Seend United 0 Westbury United Reserves 2

A NEW-LOOK Seend United, who last week kicked-off their challenge for silverware with a 2-1 win over Freshford United, welcomed another of their main rivals to the Lye.

With neither side able to find an opening in the first 75 minutes, if fell to Westbury’s Marc Lanfear to break the deadlock late on.

The points were wrapped up by Kirron Kiff with his first goal of the season.

Trowbridge Wanderers 1 Warminster Town Reserves 1

WARMINSTER Town Reserves finally got their campaign under way with a trip to defending champions Trowbridge Wanderers.

After two weeks of inactivity Warminster were chomping at the bit for a return to action and their first ever game in the top flight after promotion at the end of last term.

Andy McFarren’s visitors to Trowbridge were happy with the end result as they return home with a share of the spoils following their 1-1 draw.

Craig Gornell who was a constant thorn in Warminster’s side all afternoon gave Wanderers a first half lead.

The second half flowed from end to end with both sides having chances and with 15 minutes remaining substitute Matthew Dyer, who had on been on the field for a couple of minutes, popped up to net Warminster’s equaliser.

Both teams had chances to win it with the best falling to Warminster’s Pete Dring who, with a couple of minutes to go, missed a glorious opportunity to win it for the Weymouth Street club.
