EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTHERN PREMIER DIVISION: Cambridge City 1 Frome Town 2
9:00am Monday 17th September 2012 in Sport
FROME Town continued their good form at Cambridge City and two first-half goals from Matt Smith and Darren Jefferies were enough to ensure an excellent 2-1 victory.
Alex Lapham started his suspension following his red card at Kettering Town so Darren Jefferies took his place in midfield. Mike Reaney also returned to the side after missing Wednesday's FA Cup replay win over Larkhall Athletic.
On a perfect day and pitch, both teams started well in an entertaining opening and Lewis Powell brought a good save from Zac Barratt at the near post.
Frome were first to trouble the scorers as great work from Mike Perrott set up Matt Smith and the youngster slid in and fired home from 12 yards.
The lead was shortlived, however, and the prolific Craig Hammond headed home from close range after a long throw had been flicked on to him by MItchell Bryant.
Cambridge hit the post in the 30th minute, but then Frome took the lead six minutes later as Matt Smith set up Jefferies to jink into the box and let fly with a right foot shot that curled perfectly into the net.
But Cambridge once again nearly equalised two minutes later, but this time Darren Chitty saved well at the near post.
Both teams continued to entertain in the second half, Powell shot just past the post in the 49th minute, then a Cambridge attack in the 72nd minute led to a Hammond shooting wide after Abbs had seen his shot blocked.
Hammond almost had the last word in the match as he rose to meet a 89th-minute left wing cross, but, much to the relief of the travelling faithful, he headed over the bar and the chance went begging.
Cambridge kept looking for the equaliser in injury time, but the Frome defence held out and the precious three points started their long journey back to Somerset.
The “H&B Tyres Man of the Match” was chosen as Darren Jefferies.
