FA VASE SECOND ROUND QUALIFYING: Westbury United 4 Romsey Town 1
9:30am Monday 17th September 2012 in Sport
WESTBURY recovered from going a goal behind in the opening minute to go through to the first round proper where they will play away to Wessex Premier League side Blackfield & Langley on Saturday, October 13.
However the scoreline is somewhat flattering as Romsey gave their all before conceding two late goals, captain and defender Paul Beavers having a very good match for United.
Town went ahead very quickly as Nick White’s cross was headed powerfully by Jack Garner and Lewis Porter made a great save, however the ball was only half-cleared and Stuart Green scored with a fine 20 yard strike.
United drew level from the penalty spot on 13 minutes. Winger Nathan Hallett, a constant threat to the Town defence throughout the game, was fouled by Pete Walker and Dave Percival made no mistake with the penalty kick to score his first goal for the club.
Both teams had chances either side of half time with some good moves put together, however players were also guilty of wasting possession in the final third of the pitch.
Porter saved from Matthew Austin’s weak effort and his opposite number John Page denied Percival.
Beavers had a point-blank strike blocked by Richard Hayter after Matt Mead’s set piece had caused panic in the visiting defence.
Straight after half time Beau Blakeman had a glorious chance to put Westbury ahead but he blazed over when unmarked.
Westbury went ahead on 59 minutes as Mead and Luke Stanley combined in a quick one-two with Mead breaking through to finish well from just inside the box.
Romsey still put together some fine attacks and went close to equalising through Green and Marc Pascual, the latter finding the side netting when well placed, while at the other end substitute Tarick Yachou produced a stunning, dipping 20 yarder that Page tipped over the bar.
Porter did well to make a save when Aaron Milne headed towards goal and that turned out to be the final danger for United.
Blakeman got on the end of a Matt Mead corner to head in and make it 3-1 on 86 minutes and then raced through and finished excellently to round off the scoring in injury time.
