BOWLS: Box bow out in national last eight

BOX Ladies missed out last weekend in their bid at Royal Leamington Spa to win the Women’s National Top Club Championship title for the first time, writes DAVE EATON.

Three times in the past four seasons representing Wiltshire they had reached the final stages (last eight) of the competition, finishing fifth in 2008, and then third in both 2010 and 2011.

But once again Box Ladies fell shortly going out 3-1 in the quarter-finals to Wigton (Cumbria) who went onto lift the crown beating Croydon (Surrey) in the final 2.5-1.5.

In their match with Wigton in the last eight Box only took the honours on one of the four disciplines with Lolly Braddon, Jean Collier and Sue Cooke winning the triples 18-16. They lost in the singles, pairs and fours disciplines.

RESULTS

Singles: Janet Hardie lost to Christine Wharton 7-21.

Pairs: Karen Funnell & Alex Jacobs lost to Jackie Bewley & Kath Baxter 14-20.

Triples: Lolly Braddon, Jean Collier & Sue Cooke beat Lesley Pedlar, Anne Dalziel & Penny Peile 18-16.

Fours: Molly Manning, Judy Selbie, Sue Dix & Carol Grenfell lost to Eve Hutton, Elvera Walters, Jeannette Bell & Nicola Bowe 17-22.

Score: Box lost to Wigton 1-3.

Quarter-finals: Wigton (Cumbria) beat Box (Wilts) 3-1; Didcot (Berks) beat March Town (Cambs) 4-0; Croydon (Surrey) beat Broadway (Worcs) 2-2 (77-75); Wellingborough (Northants) beat Forest Oaks (Notts) 2.5-1.5.

Semi-finals: Wigton beat Didcot 3-1; Croydon beat Wellingborough 3-1.

Final: Wigton bt Croydon 2.5-1.5.
