FOOTBALL: Dave’s defence needs lifting

DAVE Clayton is hoping that his Melksham Town side’s defensive worries will be eased as he welcomes a host of faces back from injury in the coming weeks.

Gary Higdon netted a hat-trick last weekend but Melksham were undone 4-3 in the FA Vase by Wessex League Horndean.

“We let ourselves down last weekend because we should have had enough to win the game,” said Clayton.

“But we have been struggling in defence – we lost four centre-backs at the start of the season and I’ve had to throw in a young 17-year-old lad (Will Stead), who’d I’d rather have bedded in.

“I’m not too worried though and we should have more options in the next few weeks.”

Defender Adam Young is a doubt for this weekend’s home clash with Winterbourne United after he missed the loss top Horndean with a rib injury but Nick Ridout could be ready to make his return to the first team.
