SKITTLES: A Wonder-ful weekend due in Torquay?

THE Wiltshire Wonders team will be hoping to go one better this year as they again take part in the Blackthorn British Skittles Championships this weekend.

The Wonders, who are based in Melksham, are targeting the men’s trophy this year, having been runners-up last year.

They first entered the Blackthorn three years ago, failing to qualify.

In 2010, they were knocked out in the quarter finals and last year were beaten to top honours by rivals the Misalots, of Devon.

The team, skippered by John Wiltshire, play out at Avon Sports and Social Club, with many of the players also regulars in the Melksham league.

A total of 64 teams from across the country will take part in the Blackthorn finals which take place on Saturday at the Riviera International Conference Centre, with around 1000 players expected to feature.

A second Wiltshire team, Dave’s Battlers, who are from Malmesbury, will also go for glory in the mixed competition in Torquay.
