CHIPPENHAM SUNDAY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION: Seven-up Bug leave Brunel hunting first win

WITH Chippenham-based FC Brunel unable to use their Stanley Park they switched their S.K. Fruits Limited Chippenham Sunday League Premier Division match against Bug & Spider to Beversbrook with an afternoon kick-off.

Unfortunately for Adam O’Keeffe’s side their efforts to get the game played went unrewarded as Marcus Lovesey’s side claimed a 7-1 win to leave Brunel as the only side still yet to claim a point in the top flight this term.

Neurin Jones put Bug in front, Dave Herring doubled the visitors lead and Steve Allison’s first league goal of the season made it 3-0 before a second from Herring gave Lovesey’s men a 4-0 interval lead.

Mark Dolman added fired in five and six before Adam O’Keeffe volleyed home a consolation for Brunel.

A second from Allison sealed a second successive win for Bug & Spider who after a poor start look to be rediscovering the form that won them the Knockout cup last term.  

Biddestone Social 4 AFC Melksham 1

A WEEK on from their 3-2 success at AFC Melksham, top-flight leaders Biddestone Social welcomed Mike Rogers men to Yatton Road for the reverse fixture.

And like the previous week the spoils went to Biddestone whose 4-1 win saw them open up a three-point lead over their nearest challengers FC Jager who were without a fixture this weekend.

The game started at an electric pace swinging from end to end but with Melksham missing a golden opportunity to go ahead when a four-man passing move split the home defense and Ashley Fletcher pulled his shot wide of the mark on 10 minutes.

Fletcher made amends for his miss a few minutes later, Sean Fordham slipped a pass through to him and he drove the ball hard and low into the home net past Lewis Porter.

Melksham then pressed the hosts defence and were unlucky not to add to their lead with Jordan Kirk and Aaron Wiltshire working hard to penetrate the solid home back line.

Kieran Baggs was a constant threat to the Melksham defence as he kept Bradley Partner on his toes with some telling crosses into the visitors' box aimed toward Nat Auckland and Kris Beasley.

Baggs had a hand in Biddy’s equaliser on 20 minutes, teeing up Auckland whose shot was parried and Dave Thompson was on hand to turn the ball home for 1-1.

Chances came and went at both ends with but it was the midfield battle between Thompson and Melksham’s Jack Morris that was proving pivotal as they both looked to get their team on top before half time.

It fell to Ryan Baggs to turn provider for the third goal of the game.

A great run from the youngster saw his cut the ball back to Nathan Phillimore, who finished well at the far post to put the champions and current leaders ahead.

With the first half drawing to a close Biddestone added a third, another great cross from Ryan Baggs was headed home by Martin Johnson for 3-1.

The second half was less entertaining game with lots of hard work and effort from the patched up visitors and Biddestone not adding to their first half goals until the 75th minute when Rob Pocock drove home from 20 yards after being set up by Kieran Baggs.      

On a positive note Melksham had some excellent performances from front to back against a team full of top rate players and for large parts of the game were worthy competitors.

Referee Dan Lamport was a last-minute replacement to this match and he produced a superb display and was worthy of plaudits from both quarters for the way he managed this hard fought and entertaining encounter.
