EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTHERN PREMIER DIVISION: Frome Town 1 Redditch United 0

LEWIS Powell's strike saw Frome Town take all three points at home to Redditch United last weekend.

Frome started brightly and the first chance of the match arrived in the seventh minute as Dave Gilroy burst through from midfield and saw his shot blocked but the ball broke to the unmarked Ben Wood, who just cleared the bar with his hsot.

As the match progressed, Frome probably had the edge in both possession and territory, but the final ball always seemed to lack the required quality, and it took until the 38th minute for a real chance to present itself as Mike Perrott ran at the defence, drew two defenders and then set Gilroy free on the right.

The striker hit the dead ball line and pulled back a low, inviting cross that Powell just managed to put past the post as he slid in.

The second half started well for the Robins as good pressure led to half-chances, but the goal arrived in the 56th minute as a long, curling through ball from Dean Evans was brilliantly chested on by Powell, and under severe pressure from two defenders, he poked the ball into the corner of the net from 12 yards out.

With Gilroy having his best game for Frome and linking well with Powell, more goals seemed inevitable, and three minutes later, they combined well to enable Gilroy to hit a low inviting cross that only just evaded everyone in the Redditch box.

Darren Chitty had to be alert in the 62nd minute as he saved a 25-yard screamer from Jack Crosswell, and three minutes later, James Wren in the visitors goal also showed his class as he saved well after a great turn and shot on the volley from Gilroy.

The 68th minute saw Powell leave his marker for dead, and as he burst into the box, he tried to pull the ball back to Gilroy for a certain goal, but was just foiled by a desperate sliding tackle from a defender.

Three minutes later, the pair combined again - this time Powell headed a free kick down into the path of Gilroy, but he was slightly off balance and shot over the bar.

Chitty brought off another good save in the 83rd minute as a Redditch free kick led to a low screamer that he caught at the second attempt, but apart from that, the visitors were reduced to half-chances and Frome always looked capable of increasing their lead, with a great save from Wren just denying Wood in the 2nd minute of injury time.

Meanwhile, Nat Auckland has left Darren Perrin's side to re-join Toolstation League outfit Larkhall Athletic.
