Angling
Reservoirs in top form
WITH the trout fishing season now well underway fishermen have been enjoying
top class sport on the Bristol Water trout fisheries.
At Chew anglers have caught well in many parts of the lake on a range of
tactics. Boobies, blobs, goldheads and tadpoles in black, white and orange
continue to work well, but nymphing with the traditional diawl bachs, black
buzzers and montanas on floating lines has often been more successful,
particularly when fished very slowly or static.
Best bank areas are North Shore, Woodford and Walley Banks, and the Oak Tree
end of Nunnery. Best boat areas are more or less the same between North
Shore and the Island, off Walley Bank, and Wick Green to Spring Bay.
Heaviest of several good rainbows caught last week was Lee Sennington's 10lb
beauty taken off North Shore in a boat.
The Anglian Water Competition sponsored by Fulling Mill held at Chew on
Saturday produced excellent catches, with 348 trout taken including 27 limit
bags.
The team in first place was BRFFA Team Orvis with 48 trout for 127lb 6 oz.
Second came Team Tightlines, with 46 for 109lb 2oz, while Blagdon FF Bristol
Water, Carbotec Kingfishers and BRFFA Itchy Feet also qualified for the
next round.
Top individual rod was Guy Haskins, of BRFFA Team Orvis, with a limit plus
time bonus for 23lb 6oz. Second was Martin Burgess, also from BRFFA Team
Orvis.
It was also a good week at Blagdon with good catches from North Shore and
Butcombe when the wind has favoured these banks. When the wind has been in
the other direction Cheddar Water and Green Lawns have been the best banks.
The boats have caught well off the same areas, and are also taking good bags
of fish up at Top End.
Methods have been much the same as at Chew with static nymphs - diawl bachs
and buzzers probably the favourites.
At the Barrows all three tanks continue to produce good bags of fish to the
usual methods.
Chew produced a total catch last week of 1,234 fish averaging 2lb 5oz,
topped by a brown of 7lb and rainbow 10lb, with 77 limit bags.
At Blagdon 974 fish averaging 2lb 5oz were taken, topped by a brown of 5lb
8oz and rainbow 5lb, with 68 limits.
The Barrows yielded 309 fish averaging 1lb 7oz, topped by a brown of 3lb and
rainbow 2lb 12oz.
Fishing is also good on the Wessex Water trout fisheries.
At Clatworthy 281 fish were taken last week.
Most parts of the lake are fishing well with the fish well down and feeding
on bloodworm, snails and crayfish.
Some big bags have been taken from the South Bank. Les Gliddon took a five
fish limit for 17lb 8oz and John Lewis took a fine rainbow weighing 5lb 8oz.
At Hawkridge 182 fish were taken. Dennis Watts took a five fish limit for
14lb 6oz, topped by a rainbow of 4lb 3oz.
Martin Reece took a five fish bag for 13lb 8oz.
Sutton Bingham is still in good form with 516 fish last week. Floating lines
and goldheads have accounted for most fish.
The fish are starting to move off the bottom so as soon as it starts to warm
up the fishing will get even better.
