Angling
Reservoirs in top form

TROUT anglers are continuing to enjoy top class sport on the Bristol Water trout fisheries.

Despite the cool weather last week, the excellent fishing continued for bank and especially boat anglers at Chew Valley.

Boats found fish in most areas of the lake, but the favourite spots have been north shore, Walley Bank, behind the Island, Wick Green and off Nunnery Point.

Although nymphing is still the most popular way to catch, more fish are now showing feeding on the prolific buzzer hatches.

These fish can be tempted on dries and emergers.

The bank anglers have also found plenty of fish from many of the same areas.

Diawl bachs, buzzers and crunchers fished slowly on floating lines has accounted for some very good bags and big fish, including a magnificent 9lb brownie for Tony Baldwin and a 10lb 4oz rainbow for Lee Senington.

The South West England eliminator took place at Chew this weekend.

Top bag on the day was Mark Miles, closely followed by Simon Gurney, Tony Baldwin, Glyn Holmes and Rob Honour who all caught their eight fish limits during the competition.

There was some fantastic boat fishing at Blagdon last week from the top end of the lake.

Many anglers are completing the full 16 fish limit with many more returning fish before bagging up. Nymphs fished on floating and intermediate lines fished slowly is the method.

Bank fishing is still good although a little harder than last week mainly due to the east wind which has made fishing the favourite banks of North Shore and Butcombe more difficult.

At the Barrows all three tanks continue to produce good bags of fish to the usual methods. Some fish are now rising to the hatching buzzers.

Chew produced a total catch last week of 821 fish averaging 2lb 6oz, topped by a 9lb brown and 10lb 4oz rainbow with 49 limit bags.

At Blagdon 1,202 fish averaging 2lb 4oz were taken topped by a brown of 6lb 11oz and rainbow 5lb 4oz with 89 limit bags.

The Barrows yielded 210 fish averaging 1lb 8oz topped by a brown of 3lb 12oz and rainbow 2lb 14oz.
