NEW recruit Nikola Matawalu says the chance to ply his trade in the Aviva Premiership with Bath Rugby was too good to turn down.

The Fijian scrum-half has spent the last three seasons north of the border, helping turn Glasgow Warriors into a force in the RaboDirect Pro 12.

His last appearance for the club came in last season’s final triumph over Munster, helping them become the first Scottish team to win a major trophy in the professional era.

Bath reached the final of their own domestic league last season, only to be beaten by Saracens at Twickenham.

Mike Ford’s men will be striving to go one better in 2015-16, although Matawalu is keen to just take it one game at a time.

“It’s been really good so far. The surroundings and facilities are amazing and the town is perfect, so I have settled in well,” said 26-year-old Matawalu.

“I wanted to try something different and the challenge of playing in the Premiership with Bath came up and it was something I was really excited about. Glasgow did really well in the Rabo so I enjoyed my time there, but now I want to try to help Bath do well in the Premiership.

“The team got to the final last year but we don’t want to say we will get to the final this year again. Every week, the next game is the final for us.

“It’s a really good environment here. There are lots of good players so it’s really nice to be part of that.

“I’m really excited to play with some of the young guys here. We are good in attack and defence and it’s exciting to be part of that.”

Matawalu is less than a fortnight into his Bath career, having only arrived at the club’s Farleigh House headquarters following Fiji’s elimination from the World Cup at the group stage.

He was thrust straight into the spotlight and came off the bench as Bath made a winning start to their Premiership campaign with a 19-17 success over Exeter Chiefs at The Rec last weekend.

With one win in the bank, Matawalu is already eyeing another as Bath face their first away match of the campaign by travelling to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry to take on Wasps on Saturday.

“I really enjoyed the World Cup. I’m disappointed we didn’t qualify for the latter stages as I felt we played well in all the pool games but it was a good experience overall and hopefully I can use that now I am at Bath,” said Matawalu.

“I really enjoyed playing at The Rec on Saturday and making my debut. The supporters were great and the atmosphere was fantastic. It’s a great place to play rugby.

“We were really pleased to start the season with a win. It wasn’t the best performance but we got what we wanted at the end.

“Last week’s game has gone already and the challenge is to try to work on the areas we didn’t get quite right and try to be better this week. It will be a difficult game but hopefully we can do well.”
