BATH first team coach Darren Edwards is hoping that the club’s European exploits will hold them in good stead as they look to refocus on arresting their league form.

Having lost their last four outings, including Saturday’s 19-14 home defeat to Toulon, Bath can now concentrate solely on their Premiership campaign, starting with an arduous task at league leaders Saracens.

However, Edwards is hoping that the lessons learnt from their two recent narrow defeats to the reigning European champions will hold them in good stead.

“It is hugely important (that we turn our focus to getting back on track in the league),” said Edwards.

“We are disappointed where we are at but on the other side of things, we are hugely excited.

“We have got one focus. We haven’t even reached the halfway stage in terms of league games and this is an opportunity to really get our heads down and go for it.

“In terms of trying to break a team down, Saracens are the most difficult to do that.

“The way we were challenged against Toulon will help us there. We had to find ways of scoring points and that will be key against Saracens.

“I think it is important for us to refocus and know there are a lot of points out there up for grabs.”

Having been narrowly edged out in Toulon three weeks ago, the three-time European champions repeated the feat on Saturday at the Rec.

Exiled former England international Steffon Armitage went over the line in the 18th minute to hand the visitors an 11-6 lead at half-time before the hosts responded five minutes after the break through Anthony Watson.

Bryan Habana restored Toulon’s lead just shy of the hour mark and Eric Escande’s 77th-minute penalty kick settled matters.

“We were disappointed when we were out there. It just got away from us right at the end and again at the weekend; we were going toe-to-toe with them and just didn’t pull it off in the end,” said Edwards.

“We were fortunate to play Toulon twice in three weeks and to put yourself against the power of Toulon in that forward pack and their strike runners in particular.

“I thought our defensive work was outstanding. They are some very difficult guys to stop and some world-class individuals. We had to find a way to open them up and parts of our kicking and catching game were good.

“We were in a tough group and home games are important to win. We let one slip by with the Wasps game.

“Other than that, the intensity we need to play at, particularly in the contact area, is unforgiving. We need to make sure we get that sharper next time.”
