BATH Rugby captain Stuart Hooper said the win was all that mattered as they secured a first win in seven against Worcester Warriors on Saturday.

Mike Ford’s side travelled to second-from-bottom Worcester having lost six games on the bounce in all competitions and were forced to dig deep again as they hauled back a 14-6 deficit with 10 unanswered second half points.

Bath were first to get points on the board when Tom Homer kicked a penalty, however a reversed penalty swung the momentum in the hosts’ favour.

Cooper Vuna went on to score in the corner, converted by Tom Heathcote, to give Worcester a 13th minute lead which was doubled 13 minutes later when Donncha O’Callaghan powered over the line.

Homer narrowed the gap with another penalty three minutes later to send Bath in at half time needing to claw back an eight point deficit.

The second half did not start to plan as Mark Clark received a yellow card for a challenge on Bryce Heem, but, with 30 minutes to play, Jonathan Evans, only just on at scrum-half, scored to narrow the gap to one point.

Another Homer penalty from Homer with 10 minutes to go secured the win to the relief of many in the Bath camp.

“It was fantastic to get a win,” said Hooper.

“We hadn’t won for six games so it was an important thing to get the result although it may not have been the performance we wanted.

“In the end we moved the ball well and we were very forward orientated.

“Now returning to training on a Monday the week starts off on a better note and we will look to build on this result.”

Bath now face Wasps at the Rec, a side they have already faced three times this campaign – losing twice and winning once at the Ricoh – and Hooper knows they must be at their best to get anything from the game.

“We can’t underestimate them at all,” he added.

“They are a quality side with some very dangerous players.

“We have to make sure that we put out on the pitch what we have been working on in the week.”

Meanwhile, Bath duo George Ford and Jonathan Joseph helped England to a 40-9 win away to Italy in the RBS Six Nations with four tries between them.

“It’s a great chance for other players to prove themselves,” said Hooper.

“We’ve got world quality players away, which we are proud of, and now it is about the players stepping up to prove themselves.

“It was great watching the boys performing for England.

“George getting the first try and then JJ with his hat-trick, it was a proud moment to see them in a white shirt.”
