BATH second row Charlie Ewels says that winning is an art they need to learn after seeing his side claim another losing bonus point at home to Wasps at the weekend.

A late Amanki Mafi try with the last play of the game earned Mike Ford’s men a losing bonus point in the 21-18 loss at the Rec.

That was Bath’s sixth losing bonus point of the campaign and Ewels knows they must get smart when it comes to edging out close contests.

“We were 15 points down and then got those two tries in the last 10 or 15 minutes and it just shows the character of the boys and that they are still fighting for every point possible,” he said.

“I think it is definitely a skill, how to win games and how to close out games.

“I don’t know how many bonus points we have got but we have got a load of them where we keep finishing within seven points but are not securing those wins.

“You can’t start worrying about the little things and each player has got to go away and focus on their own stuff and with a squad this good it is going to come.

“All we can do is keep working hard and knuckle back down this week and focus on Exeter this weekend.”

Competition for places in the second row at the Rec has been rife this season and the 20-year-old is enjoying his chance to prove himself alongside the likes of skipper Stuart Hooper and internationals Dave Attwood and Dominic Day.

“Yes there is competition but equally I am in a great environment to learn with the likes of Dave Attwood, Stuart Hooper, Dom Day, players with so much experience, “I wouldn’t see it as competition but more as people I can learn off to get better.

“As a young guy all you want to do is play and I am grateful to Mike (Ford) for the opportunity and hopefully I am repaying him with decent performances.”
