FIRST-TEAM coach Toby Booth hopes another strong home performance on Saturday can help set the tone for a successful Bath season.

Bath celebrated their opening home match of the campaign at The Rec last weekend by running in eight tries against Newcastle Falcons to romp to an emphatic 58-5 success.

Todd Blackadder’s side will be back in front of their own supporters this weekend when they host Worcester Warriors, looking to make it three wins from three at the start of the new Aviva Premiership season.

“You don’t have to tell us just how fickle this competition can be so we aren’t going to get ahead of ourselves,” said Booth.

“All we can do is focus on ourselves and try to keep getting better as that’s all we can control.

“The most important thing this weekend is that we are at home again as irrespective of who the opposition is, everyone knows the fundamentals of how successful your season can be is based on how well you play at home.

“Worcester are a big heavy side and it is going to be a physical contest.

“Carl Hogg is in charge now (at Worcester) so he will have his own take on things from where they were last year and he also has a history with Todd from Edinburgh so I’m sure there will be some friendly words before the game.

“The most important thing, though, is that we concentrate on ourselves and try to play as well as we can again.”

It was as youthful Bath side that lined up against the Falcons, with academy player Zach Mercer making his debut in the back-row and recent graduates of the youth system, centre Max Clark and lock Charlie Ewels, also in the starting XV.

With Bath already having to deal with their fair share of injuries, Booth says it is encouraging to know that the youngest members of the squad can be relied upon.

“We were delighted with the outcome on Saturday and we feel it’s a result of what has gone before,” said Booth.

“We worked very hard in pre-season and we won all three of our games, we played well at Northampton to win there in round one and the Newcastle result is just a continuation of that.

“The fact we have got players who can come in and play well is an indicator that we have prepared well.

“You don’t always know how they will react until you put them in but we trust in this squad whole-heartedly and they responded well.”

“When you’ve got a massively long campaign, like it is in England, you know you are going to have to rely on everyone to play a part at some stage and it’s good to know that we can do that.”
