WORLD Cup winner Jason Robinson has called on England boss Eddie Jones to hand Semesa Rokoduguni a run of games on the international stage.

The Bath man produced a man-of-the-match performance against Fiji at Twickenham two weeks ago, before being dropped in favour of centre Elliot Daly for the clash with Argentina.

Jones spoke before the Fiji game about the need to manage the Fijian-born player sensitively to avoid a repeat of his experience of his Test debut against New Zealand in 2014 when he struggled to cope with the intensity of the occasion and went on to spend over two years in the international wilderness.

But a red card for Daly against the Pumas has opened the door for a recall for Rokoduguni and now he must compete with Harlequin Marland Yarde for a starting spot this weekend against Australia.

And Robinson has been impressed with what he has seen from the Bath flyer so far this season and has called on more of the same from the Fijian-born player.

“For me, Roko just needs to keep doing what he does and hopefully he gets the opportunity,” said Robinson, who was speaking on behalf of Land Rover at the 2016 HITZ awards.

HITZ is the sport for change programme that uses rugby to help youngsters tackle some of life’s biggest challenges and helps them get back into education and employment. “He has impressed me so far.

“I am hoping that this week, he gets the opportunity because for me he is ahead of Yarde and he is behind May.

“The more times he can play and the better opposition he can play against, hopefully that will bring out the best him. If not it will expose him at a higher level and then we will know where he has to work to get better.

“I am just hoping after the man of the match performance and two tries, I hope he gets a shot this week and proves to Eddie that he can do a job.

“Eddie Jones will have explained to him why he isn’t selected, so Roko would’ve had to take that on board, take it on the chin and keep working on it.

“That is all you can do as a player, he is certainly helping to raise the standard for England and when you can drop a player like Roko after his performance then actually England are not in a bad place.”

Questions have been raised over the last seven days about Rokoduguni’s ability to flourish on the international stage but Robinson is not worried.

The World Cup winner has been impressed with the Bath man’s statistics in the Aviva Premiership and has called on the winger to simply repeat his club-form now on the international stage.

“He certainly can nail down a starting spot in the England side because he has got the talent, but what’s evident at the moment is that Eddie Jones expects tries, outside of that he wants players to be good defenders, great workrate, getting all the little technical things, going looking for work,” added Robinson, speaking at the annual HITZ awards, held in London, which is an opportunity for key national partners Land Rover, Barclays, Wooden Spoon and Comic Relief to reward youngsters for their commitment and achievements on the HITZ programme.

“There are always ways for players to improve, but at the same time, on the front foot he is one of the best attackers in the Premiership.

“You look at his stats and he has the most metres made, defenders beaten, he is second on tries. He scored two the other week – he is doing lots of good things well, he has just got to keep working.

“He certainly hasn’t played himself out of it. It just shows how strong England are.

“You always need that game-breaker. You look at all the successful teams in world rugby, you look at the hardest teams to beat and play against, and they always have players in certain positions that are able to turn a game.

“You can work on defence and structure and everything else, but nothing prepares you for a dropped ball or a poor kick when you’ve got players out of position, and you get guys like Rokoduguni – as he showed when he got man of the match – he is cutting through people.

“He scored fantastic tries, making great breaks and all of a sudden, it gets the opposition changing their game.”
