WAYNE Simmonds was the star of the show at the Bowls Wiltshire finals held last weekend at Devizes, writes DAVE EATON.

The Holt club dominated proceedings with club secretary Simmonds competing in four men’s championship finals and winning all four – singles, pairs, triples and fours – and added the domestic secretary’s and treasurers pairs event.

Simmonds missed out on a clean sweep as Holt were beaten in the final of the Wiltshire Four Rink League final by Wootton Bassett.

On day one, Simmonds combined with Justin Davis, Wayne Snook and Ben Gadd to easily take the men’s fours championship title against another Holt four of Rod Summers, Tony Keating, Kevin Rowden and Craig Doughty.

In the afternoon Simmonds, together with Snook and Gadd, he won the county triples title, defeating Spencer Moulton’s national winning trio of Andy Colebrooke, Russell Francis and Graham Shadwell 18-15.

Simmonds then joined up with club colleague Gary Potton to successfully defend the secretary’s and treasurers event, beating Wootton Bassett’s Sue Reeve and Harold Jones 23-9 over 18 ends.

The winning streak continued on Sunday morning as Simmonds got off to a great start in the singles against holder Mel Biggs (Westlecot), winning 21-10.

He then joined up with Snook in the pairs to face Biggs and Mike Jackson (Westlecot) the holders, pulling victory out of the fire over the last four ends with three counts of two and a single on the 21st and last end for a 20-19 win.

It was Snook’s third title while it gave Simmonds five title wins and, although he did not feature for Holt in the Tourist Trophy final, the club still won the double rinks final 49- 35 against Amesbury.

Holt men surprisingly missed out in the Wiltshire Four Rink League play-offs final despite being warm favourites to lift the title for only the second time in the club’s 93-year history.

They were beaten by nine shots (77-68) by Wootton Bassett despite holding a healthy 44-31 lead across the board at halfway.

Other winners at Devizes were 14-year-old Georgina Newman (Trowbridge Westbourne) who defeated Broughton Gifford’s Jean Richards 17-13 in the ladies unbadged singles semi-finals, then Highworth’s Jenny Wilson 16-11 after only 19 ends to collect her first Wiltshire title.

Warminster trio of Sadie Farrell, Sue Burgess and Jo Dunford cruised to a 22-8 victory Westlecot in the Ladies County Benevolent Triples final.

Box retained the ladies county Top Ten team competition trophy despite a big scare by Wootton Bassett.

Spencer Moulton’s Russell Francis lost his second final when losing 16-7 to Westlecot’s Graham Hatherall in the two wood singles.
