CLARRIE Dunbar recorded a big win over Clevedon in the Egham Trophy (national inter-club mixed championship last Sunday morning) but 24 hours earlier, the ladies fell at the second hurdle in the Yetton Trophy to North Wilts, writes DAVE EATON.

Last season Clarrie lost out to Clevedon on the last end by one shot in a fourth round Egham match, but this time gained sweet revenge powering to a 51-shot 93-42 victory.

Dunbar made a fast start leading across the board 30-12 after five ends and 51-25 at ten. They continued to dominate pulling away to lead 86-33 after 15 ends and finally won 93-42.

Russell Francis’ home rink provided the biggest winning margin of 21 shots while alongside Andy Colebrooke’s four won by 12.

And Clarrie‘s two away rinks skipped by John Freeman (15 shots) and Graham Shadwell (three shots) both recorded victories to complete a whitewash over their fellow Somerset side.

Clarrie now progress to round three and will face Bristol on November 30.

In the ladies Yetton Trophy (national inter-club championship) second round tie last Saturday, Clarrie had to give second best to former winners Chippenham-based North Wilts.

Dunbar Ladies lost by 25 shots as they went down 86-61 with only the rink skipped by Marcia Hartley away in Chippenham managing to register a rink victory of four shots.

Across the board Clarrie Dunbar only trailed 21-17 at five ends and 40-30 at ten.

But then North Wilts pulled right away to leave Clarrie trailing 66-42 at 15 ends and 82-43 at 18, however a late flurry saw them reduce the final deficit from 39 shots to only 25.

North Wilts will now face Bristol in the third round on Saturday, November 22.

IN OTHER national inter-club knock-out team competitions Clarrie Dunbar men face Bristol in the second round of the Denny Cup tomorrow (Saturday) at 10am.

While Christie Miller men are due to meet North Wilts tomorrow in the first round of the consolation Denny Plate competition.

And in the men’s O60s Double Rinks competition Christie Miller are drawn against Clarrie Dunbar A side in a third round tie due to be played by November 28.

In the ladies equivalent, Mason Trophy, Clarrie Dunbar and North Wilts are due to lock horns again in the third round by Nov 28.

Clarrie edged past Christie 37-36 in the previous round while North Wilts B beat their A team 49-25 .

THREE Christie Miller ladies are named in the Wiltshire women’s team to face Gloucestershire this Sunday at home at North Wilts in the opening round of the inter-county championship for the Atherley Trophy.

Eileen Hawker is chosen as a lead with Bev Lilley at three and Sheila Garlick as skip in the same rink. They are joined by Jan Tombs from North Wilts.

While Miller’s Joyce Little is named as one of the seven reserves.
