NORTH WILTS march on in the national indoor inter-club competitions.

Following two wins the previous weekend in the men’s Denny Cup and mixed Top Club competitions they notched another five in separate events over the space of five days last week.

The Ladies B team in the Mason Trophy, over 60s double rinks, got the ball rolling as they recorded a 39-shot victory over Clarrie Dunbar 57-18 in a round one tie.

The home rink of Ann Roberts-Phare, Janet Hardie, Jean Collier and Fizz Mace beat Ailsa Midwinter (skip) 28-5 while away the quartet of Norma Rowden, Jane Taylor, Irene Button and Sue Cooke beat Ann Jones (skip) 29-13.

The senior men were successful in their close double rinks match with Christie Miller coming from behind throughout - 31-26 down at 18 ends - to draw level on the last 32-32 and grab victory on an extra end.

The away rink of Miles Pickering, Peter Sanders, Alan Small and Trevor Cooke beat John Crowder (skip) 18-14 while at home Richard Jennings, Ashley Ponting, Dave Williams and Richard Gainey lost 18-14 but turned up trumps on the extra with a count of two to seal a last gasp 34-32 win.

They now face Thornbury in a round three tie to be played by Nov 27.

The following day, the ladies side, who reached the quarter-finals last season in the Vivienne Trophy, triumphed 66-60 against West Berks (Newbury), in an opening round tie.

This season the competition has been changed from four rink (fours) matches to four triples games - two home, two away.

In a tight opening five ends across the board North Wilts edged ahead 16-15 and led 36-30 at halfway.

They still held a five shot lead 53-48 at 15 ends and despite dropping a five in one match on end 17 finally won 66-60 at 18 ends although individual games were tied 2-2.

North Wilts now face Bristol in round two on Thursday, December 3.

The club's ladies beat Nailsea 87-57 on the Saturday in the second round of the Yetton Trophy and 24 hours later the mixed side completed the five-timer as they defeated local rivals Christie Miller 84-66 in the second round of the Egham Trophy.

In the Yetton Trophy match previous national winners North Wilts were always too strong for Nailsea leading throughout.

Across the board they were 19-14 up at five ends, had extended the lead to 36-28 at ten and 54-40 at 15 and finally won by 30 shots 87-57.

At home at North Wilts Irene Button’s rink won 20-13 but Fizz Mace’s four lost 18-16.

Away in Nailsea the seasoned duo of Alex Jacobs and Sue Cooke led their respective rinks to 29-11 and 22-15 victories.

North Wilts now meet Clarrie Dunbar in round three next Saturday, November 21 - two rinks home and two away.

In the mixed Egham Trophy competition North Wilts always had the upper hand in the derby against Christie Miller, Melksham.

They led across the board narrowly 19-17 after five ends but had moved 48-33 up at ten and increased the advantage to 64-48 at 15 before finally winning by 18 shots 84-66 and winning on three of the four rinks.

Richard Gainey and Dave Williams rinks at home both won by ten shots but the games away in Melksham were certainly much tighter.

ALEX Jacobs has qualified for the area final in the national champion of champions competition.

North Wilts representative in this event this season Jacobs beat Purnell’s Pauline Dando 21-15 in the quarter-finals and in the Area 30 semi-finals defeated Bev Lilley (Christie Miller) 21-12.

She will now travel to Bristol to meet Rose Constant in the area final on November 22 who beat England international Stefanie Branfield (Clevedon) in the area semi-final 21-18.

But North Wilts representative, Bob George, in the men’s section, went out in the area semi-final. After a 21-13 win over Bob Chappell (Nailsea) in the quarter-finals he went down 21-2 in the semis to Clevedon’s former England international Pip Branfield.
