TROWBRIDGE’S Graham Shadwell has been named by Bowls England as one of 14 players on the provisional shortlist from which they will select the team for the 2016 World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand, from November 28 to December 16, writes DAVE EATON.

The squad includes all those players that successfully participated in the Atlantic Games in Cyrpus late last year, which acted as a pre-qualifying event for the World Championships.

Spencer Moulton (Bradford-on-Avon) bowls club member Shadwell, 40, is an established England international. He won a bronze medal with Louis Ridout in the pairs event recently in Cyprus and just missed out on another medal in the fours .

Shadwell was also a gold medallist in the Atlantic Games in Cyprus in the triples in 2011 along with John Hick and Jamie Chestney, won bronze at the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010 and is a twice World Championship medal winner in Australasia.

He won a bronze in the fours in the 2008 championships in New Zealand and a bronze again with Jamie Chestney in the pairs – the only England men medal winners - in 2012 in Australia.

“I am really looking forward to being involved in the programme again,” said Shadwell.

“I have played in New Zealand and Australia before in the world championships and know the greens down there, so all should be okay if I am selected for the final team.

“It is just a case of playing well during the coming season and staying in the selector’s sights,” he added.

The final team of five men and five women will be announced in September.

Shadwell, who plays indoors at the Clarrie Dunbar club, in Standerwick, won two Area 30 titles in the men’s singles and pairs championships last Saturday at City and County of Bristol IBC.

In the afternoon he teamed up with Craig Hadfield-Doughty to beat Mark Woods and Nick Pearce (Clevedon) 24-17 in the area pairs final.

Boosted by a five on the third end Doughty and Shadwell led their Clevedon opponents 8-5 after five ends and with another count of five on the 11th end moved 14-9 up and then went 19-14 ahead at 18 ends.

Another count of five this time on the next (19th end) virtually sealed the game and they won two ends later 24-17 to book a place in the inter-area final against a partnership from St Andrew, Weston-super-Mare skipped by either Andrew Owens or Ken Uglow, who have yet to play their Area 29 final.

The inter-area final is just one step away from booking a place in early April at Melton & District in the main four men’s national championship events - singles, pairs, triples and fours.

A few hours after winning in Bristol in the area pairs final Shadwell was back on the green at Ashton Vale contesting the Area 30 singles final against Dave Williams (North Wilts) who he comfortably beat 21-7.

Shadwell moves forward to the inter-area singles final and will play on a neutral green Area 29 winner Levi Hembrow (Taunton Deane). No date or venue has been decided as yet.

Shadwell is also still running in the fours and has reached the area final. Together with Craig Doughty, Andy Colebrooke and Russell Francis they are due to lock horns with another Clarrie Dunbar foursome of John Freeman, Brian Hawkins, Keith Bailey and Barry Barry at home at Standerwick next Wednesday, February, 24.

A trio from Clarrie Dunbar of Dale Taylor, Terry Perkins and Andy Colebrooke have reached the Area 30 final in the national triples as well.

They are due to play away in Melksham today (Friday, Feb 19) and face the Christie Miller triple of Steve Snook, Darren Anteney and Wayne Snook.
