NORTH WILTS Indoor Club’s top two womens bowlers, Alex Jacobs and Sue Cooke, will be seeking more glory at the English Indoor Bowling Association’s headquarters in Melton Mowbray over the next 10 days in the fifth and final block final of the 2015/16 national championships.

The duo to date have featured in all four of the Chippenham-based North Wilts club’s four ladies national title successes since the indoor section opened 20 years ago in 1996 at Westcroft.

They were members of the side that won the ladies final in the Yetton Trophy, national inter-club knock-out team tournament in 2007 when defeating Surrey side Egham.

While on the individual front in championship events they were winners of the national fours also in 2007 along with Carol Grenville (lead) and Janet Hardie (three) when defeating Diss (Norfolk) in the final 16-15.

More success came in 2010 when Cooke (lead) and Jacobs (skip) teamed up together to comfortably lift the pairs championship beating City of Ely in the final 22-14.

Then early last week the dynamic duo of Cooke and Jacobs struck again, in the fourth block of this season’s national championship and competitions in Nottingham.

They added to their impressive list of national titles when teaming-up with Jean Collier (lead) to win the Over 50s Two Wood Triples crown when defeating Huntingdon in the final 19-14 after an extra end.

The duo go searching for more glory next Wednesday and Thursday, April 13-14 when together with Irene Button at lead they compete in the last 16 of the ladies national triples championship, one of the top ladies indoor events that they have not won before.

The draw could have been kinder for the North Wilts trio as they have been drawn against an all-England senior international triple from City of Ely (Cambs) of Catherine Popple, Sarah Seymour and 2016 World Ladies Matchplay Champion Ellen Falkner at skip at 9.30am.

Should they overcome Ely, the North Wilts ladies would then face in the quarter-finals on the evening of April 13 (6pm) either Croydon (Surrey) or Riverain (Hitchin, Herts).

The semi-final and final are scheduled to be play on Thursday, April 14 at 10am and 3pm respectively.

Cooke also lines-up in the ladies national singles championship which is being staged on April 15-17.

After beating pairs partner Jacobs in the Area 30 final 21-16 she followed it up with a victory over Kirsty Hembrow (Taunton Deane) by a similar scoreline in the inter-area final to qualify for the last 16 at Melton & District.

Cooke has been drawn against Brenda Bowyer (Essex County) in the last 16 on Friday 15 (4pm).

If successful she would advance to the quarter-finals the following day and face either Amy Stanton (Welford-on-Avon, Warks) or Julie Leake (Bournemouth) with whom she had a titanic battle two years ago in the quarter-finals of the champion of champion singles event.

Cooke led Leake 20-17 at 21 ends but finally lost to her by one shot 21-20.
