NORTH Wilts ladies endured mixed fortunes last weekend in national team championship matches, winning in the Yetton Trophy handsomely, but both their sides missed out in the Mason Trophy, writes DAVE EATON.

Former winners of the Yetton Trophy (inter-club four rink championship) in 2008, North Wilts comfortably brushed aside local rivals Clarrie Dunbar 94-41 in the last 32 of this season’s competition last Saturday.

They won on all four rinks in the 94-41 success with the away foursome of Carol Massey, Karen Funnell, Irene Button and Sue Cooke leading the victory charge with a 19-shot success.

North Wilts only led 14-13 across the board after five ends but had moved 45-23 up at 10 and 54-29 ahead at 14 before pulling away further to finally record a 94-41 victory over Clarrie Dunbar at 18 ends.

The Chippenham side will now face Egham (Surrey) in the next round in the new year on January 7, possibly on a neutral green.

A day earlier both North Wilts' A and B sides went out of the Over 60s double rinks for the Mason Trophy.

The A side of home rink Julie Underhill, Viv Baskerville, Barbara Shepheard and Rosemary Fitzpatrick (skip) plus away rink of June Coyle, Margaret Walker, Wendy Ivory and skip Pat Edmonds were beaten in their second round match by Nailsea A 38-25.

The B team of Ann Roberts-Phare, Jane Taylor, Fizz Mace and Alex Jacobs (home skip) plus away rink of Jean Collier, Janet Hardie, Irene Button and skip Sue Cooke fared no better, losing to Thornbury 37-26.

The damage was done at North Wilts with the home rink losing 20-7.

North Wilts club’s ladies are still running in the national team event for the Vivienne Trophy - four rinks of triples - a competition for non-Yetton players and face Bromsgrove in round three on January 12.
