LAST season's S.K. Fruits Ltd-sponsored Chippenham & District Sunday League top flight winners, The Castle, hosted Corsham CC Wildcats, who are many people’s favourites to finish top of the pile this term.

Castle led three times before letting the Wildcats back in to claim a point from a thrilling 4-4 draw.

Goals from Jack Bramwell and Rob Mitchell gave Castle a 2-0 half-time lead. Adam Mitchell and Leigh Rogers got the Wildcats back on level terms only for them to fall 3-2 behind when Mitchell bagged his second of the morning for Tom Perkins' side.

The Wildcats restored parity again courtesy of a second from Mitchell.

Locked together at three apiece they had everything to play for and it looked all over for the Wildcats when Tom Slater netted to hand the advantage back to the Castle.

Leading 4-3 all they had to do was see out the final moments but Wildcats never-say-die attitude was again in evidence as Chay Forester found the net to earn his team a 4-4 draw.

After suffering a surprise loss at Goatacre last weekend, AFC Melksham had the job of trying to halt leaders Prestige Bodyworks, who arrived at Christie Miller looking to extend their unbeaten run to nine matches.

They did exactly that and with Corsham Wildcats dropping points at the Castle it was a good day all round for Tyrone Prades' side.

First-half goals from Adam O’Keeffe and Alex Pring saw Prestige avoid a potential banana skin.

Westbury Rangers were in action for the first time since the middle of November and a trip to FC Constitutional for whom it was their penultimate game of the campaign ended with honours even as a late goal earned Rangers a 2-2 draw.

Ben Leslie was on hand to head the Cons in front on 15 minutes. Liam Griffiths got Rangers back on level terms only for the Cons to reclaim the lead in the 40th minute. Paul Mannings long throw was flicked on by Phil Mellor to the back post where defender Chris Jenkins was to prod home his first goal of the season.

With 15 minutes remaining Westbury fashioned an equaliser, Matt Gardiner’s first goal of the campaign ensuring things ended all square.

Goatacre CC FC suffered a frustrating morning against old adversaries White Horse A FC, in what was their penultimate game of the season.

The villagers would have gone into the game with a degree of confidence after a couple of impressive recent results, but it was the Westbury side that recorded back-to-back wins for only the second time this season, courtesy of a 3-0 win.

Horse, at somewhere near full strength for the first time in months, started the better and got their reward with a 10th-minute opener, Lewis Porter netting his first for the club having been put through by a sublime Paul Beavers pass.

In what was otherwise a good morning for them, the visitors did suffer the set back of two first-half injuries – Dan Sandford to a back problem and Allan Clarke to what appeared a serious knee injury.

However, it didn’t stop them from extending their lead in the 35th minute through Beavers who tucked home from close range.

The fat lady appeared to be ready to open her lungs four minutes later as Horse were awarded a penalty for a stray Goatacre hand in the box, but Dale Rowland squandered the opportunity, putting wide from 12 yards.

The disappointment of the first 45 minutes, that had seen the hosts enjoy a fair amount of possession without creating anything clear cut and have appeals of their own for a penalty dismissed, continued in a similar fashion in the second period.

Although they opened up the Horse backline more frequently, their chances were either wasted or kept out by veteran shot stopper Andy Ladd. Midway though the second half Rowland finally added the icing to the cake, finishing well to redeem his earlier penalty miss.
