STONEWOOD Sundays (BFC) saw their hopes of finishing as Division Three runners-up disappear following their 5-2 defeat at the hands of champions The Grapes United FC, whose 19th win of the campaign leaves them just needing to beat Corsham Park next weekend to complete a perfect season.

Stonewood knew beforehand that for them to deny FC Bradford second spot they would need to beat the already-crowned champions.

What was already a massive job became an impossible one after goals from Stuart Barber and Emilio Menghini had put Grapes 2-0 up before Dan Hughes pulled a goal back for Stonewood.

A 32nd goal of the season for Stuart Barber put Grapes 3-1 in front and when Nick Ridout added number and Lee Fielding fired home Grapes fifth of the morning, Stonewood’s hope of claiming silverware in their first season had gone.

A goal late on for Ashley Barnett was scant consolation for Stonewood who will look back on defeats against Buttercross and Cannings Rangers earlier in the season and think what could have been.

Pete Drew’s Cannings Rangers signed off their first season in the league with a 7-3 home success over Trowbridge Wanderers which ensured them a commendable mid table finish.

Jason Greenidge saw his opener for Cannings cancelled out by Carl Mackness, however Cannings regained the lead through Gabrial Gospodinov and they went into the break 3-1 in front courtesy of a Taylor Worthy goal.

Wanderers got themselves back in the game early in the second period, Elliott Hinton scoring from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit with Cannings restored their two-goal cushion thanks to Jason Greenidge, for whom it was his 17th of the campaign.

Back came Wanderers and a second of the morning from Carl Mackness narrowed the gap to the odd goal.

A first league goal of the season for Harry Easton put the home team 5-3 up and after that they took control of things, Richard Mansell made it 6-3 and a second for Taylor Worthy wrapped things up.

Both teams finished the game with 10 players after Cannings had Jacob Rogers and Wanderers had Rob Elliott sent off for fighting.
