DIVISION TWO REPORT: Boroughs edge Ashton in top of table clash

WITH Division Two leaders Sutton Benger without a game, the focus of attention turned to the match at Sherston between promotion hopefuls FC Boroughs and Steeple Ashton Rangers.

The home team had never beaten Ashton but when they needed to produce the goods they did just that as they claimed a massive victory and with it the two points on offer thanks to a nail-biting 2-0 success. The first half of the game ended goalless and had very few opportunities with the majority of the play being played in the midfield.

The best opportunity of the half fell to Ashton's Steve White. He picked up on a poor kick by Boroughs keeper Joe Neale and rounded a defender but his shot was scuffed and easily gathered by the retreating goalkeeper.

The second half was very similar to the first, with neither side able to create any real chances.

But on 70 it was Boroughs that made the breakthrough, a long ball over the top found Jack Ellis and he kept his cool and finished past Ashton keeper Nathan Taylor.

Boroughs wrapped up the game 10 minutes later. Liam Bailey picked up the ball in the box and cut back past his defender and his strike wrong footed Taylor and went into the bottom corner.

Ashton did have their chances late on. Mark Hunt was twice unable to convert one-on-ones and striker Steve White was unfortunate his bending shot looking destined for the net but Joe Neale was able to scramble back and tip the ball onto the bar.

The Wren FC 1 Chippenham West End 6

BOTTOM of the table Wren may have shocked Chippenham West End by taking the lead against them at Beversbrook, but Jamie-Lloyd Davies' side were unable to build on their promising start as the West End hit back to claim a 6-1 win which takes them into third spot and makes them serious promotion candidates.

Steve Roberts set up Davies who stunned West End on five minutes with a great finish that put Wren one up.

West End gradually got back into the game and drew level when Scott Nash ran onto a long ball from Jason Cole and slotted home for one each.

West End got their noses in front just before half time when with almost a replica of their first goal they made it 2-1, this time keeper Dan Hibberd provided the pass for Nash to score his second of the game.

After the break the Wren’s heads dropped and Nash added two more both of them well finished one on ones to take his haul for the game to four.

Ben Hibberd added a header and Steve Coleman scored a great solo effort by beating three players and curling home a beauty from wide out on the left.
