THIS season’s Westernsport Trophies-sponsored WG Parr Trophy has to be one of the most open for many years and although remaining top flight sides FC Brunel and FC Colerne are favourites for glory this term they both face tricky opponents in their first-round matches.

Brunel, who scrapped past second division Southwick Wanderers in the preliminary round, travel to Division One leaders Bradford Renegades, who thumped Talbot 9-2 to set up this meeting.

Unfortunately for Brunel they come against a Renegades side who are in red-hot form and go into the game on the back of six successive victories.

If, as expected, they get over this challenge, Lance Davis’ side will have a very good chance of going all the way to this seasons final.

Fourth division Trowbridge Town Supporters Club claimed one of the results of the previous round when they beat Christian Malford 6-3.

The reward for Kevin Williams side is a trip to third division Cavalier, who received a bye to this stage.

If the visitors could conjure up another magical performance it would be the first time that they have made it into the last eight of any of the league’s cup competitions.

Cavalier won both meetings between the teams last term, but in what could be another high-scoring match it’s the supporters’ who are tipped for glory.

The all-first division affair featuring Malmesbury-based FC Boroughs and Biddestone White Horse should be a good contest between two evenly-matched sides who are separated in the league by two places and two points.

Biddestone, who had a bye in the last round, just have the upper hand but with home advantage Boroughs may just have a slight edge over their guests.

Of the seven first-round ties, there are a few mouth-watering clashes to look forward to, with the pick of them probably being the fixture between Premier Dvision FC Colerne and second division White Horse.

Colerne, who lifted the cup in 2002 and 2007, are tipped for glory this season, but Clive Black’s White Horse side, who have made a great start to the season, have a fantastic chance of causing an upset in what will be a closer than expected battle.

Another tie that has upset written all over it, is the one due to be staged at Sutton Benger, where second division GRFC welcome first division North Star A.

Star struggled past Corsham Park Rangers to reach this stage and another lacklustre display from Liam Westland’s side could see them exit the competition a lot earlier that they would want to.

The hosts pushed top flight side FC Brunel all the way in last week's Sunday Cup before losing 6-5 and if they can repeat that form then Tam Laidlaw’s side will be the one in the draw for the quarter finals.

Tom Perkins takes his first division Castle FC side to second division outfit Kings Arms (All Cannings).

Castle overcame fellow Devizes-based side FC Buscots in the previous round and this tie will be seen as another derby day battle.

The result should go the way of Castle as their hosts have not really got into their stride this term.

However, a home win shouldn’t be ruled out as they had a good win to get to this stage.

Sutton Benger defeated first round opponents Miller Sports 2-0 in their Division Two encounter just a fortnight ago and it’s hard to see anything other than another victory for a Benger side, who needed extra time before disposing of Goatacre CC in the last round.

Miller shouldn’t be written off as they beat first division Prestige Bodyworks to set up the meeting with Benger, if they have another top class performance in them waits to be seen, but if they have then a shock could be on the cards, but it is very unlikely.
