POPULAR Chippenham Town striker Alan Griffin is to leave the club following his recent knee surgery, the Bluebirds announced today.

Fans' favourite Griffin will take a break from Southern League football following his operation, which has left him unavailable for boss Mark Collier's squad for much of the season.

Long-serving frontman Griffin has been restricted to just three appearances this season, scoring once, his final appearance coming in the 5-0 defeat at Bideford prior to Christmas, when he was replaced at half time.

Collier said today: "Following discussions with Alan it has been amicably agreed to end the player’s season prematurely, both I and Alan have taken this decision following his recent knee surgery.

"Griff feels he needs to take a complete break from the rigorous of Southern League football.

"This decision was taken with a heavy heart and replacing Alan as a player and as a man around the club will be most difficult.

"I have enjoyed working with big Griff, I am most grateful for his massive contribution in my short time at the club.''

A club statement added: "The directors would like to thank Alan for his many years of loyal service to the club and wish him all the best for the future. Hopefully we will see Alan back at Hardenhuish Park very soon.''

Griffin enjoyed two spells with the Bluebirds, the latest starting in September 2009, having also played for them for two years from the summer of 2005. He also enjoyed spells with Swindon Supermarine and Mangotsfield United.
