LUKE Ballinger may have got back amongst the goals at Chippenham Town this week but is in no doubt that he and his teammates need to discover their ruthless streak.

The Bluebirds midfielder weaved past three Biggleswade Town opponents before lashing home a left-footed shot to open the scoring on Tuesday night, with that strike – his first since last September – moving him level alongside fellow top-scorers Alex Ferguson and Ashan Holgate on five goals.

But despite enjoying the lion’s share of matters against Biggleswade, Chippenham were still held to a 1-1 draw at Hardenhuish Park and Ballinger thinks that the Bluebirds need to become more clinical in front of goal.

“We played really well in the first half, with a really good tempo, and I think it was the best we’ve started a game all season,” said the Chippenham man.

“But we still seemed to look vulnerable on the counter-attack and we let them get back in it with a sloppy goal.

“I think our problem is that we’re not scoring enough goals. If you take the Poole game out of it (a 3-1 loss last month), our performances have been good but we probably should have scored three or four against Weymouth.

“We just haven’t been clinical enough and for me, five months is certainly the biggest drought of my career.

“I think we all know that we have to score more and hopefully we can make it happen and start pushing up the table.”
