CHIPPENHAM Town chief Mark Collier is eyeing up a place in the top 10 after brushing past fellow mid-table side Slough Town 2-0.

Jordan Roberts and Alex Ferguson both struck in the second half at Hardenhuish Park as the Bluebirds climbed above their visitors into 13th in the table.

They are now just two points adrift of tenth-placed Hitchin Town, who they entertain next weekend.

“We feel like we are a top-10 team and that is our incentive for the rest of the season,” said Collier.

“We’ve drawn far too many games to finish in the top six but we are now getting a few people back from injuries and suspensions and we’re getting stronger. We had some good players miss out on Saturday.

“Our next goal is to try to get three points against Hitchin on Saturday. The first aim is to get into the top ten and if we can do that and stabilise ourselves, then we can look to get into the top eight after that.”

The Bluebirds had to bide their time against Slough and found things tough going in the first half as they had to play up the slope and into a heavy breeze.

They were able to escape that period unscathed and then took full advantage when they had the better of the conditions in the second half.

After a period of sustained pressure, Chippenham took the lead on 59 minutes when a high ball into the box eventually fell at the feet of Roberts, who drove a low shot past Slough keeper Luke Williams.

And Ferguson doubled the lead on 71 minutes when he weaved his way to the edge of the area before exchanging passes with Roberts and beating Williams with a low shot.

Collier added: “It was a good workmanlike, professional performance.

“The goals we scored were too good goals and it was good to get Jordan Roberts on the scoresheet as he has been out for a while injured.

“We were actually a little bit disappointed not to score more goals because we created quite a few chances but we were very pleased with the clean sheet.”
