CHIPPENHAM Town moved into the top half of the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division table with victory over Burnham on Saturday.

The Bluebirds dominated the opening half but took their time in making their possession count.

Chances fell to midfielders and defenders in the opening half hour with Conor McCormack, James Guthrie and Jordan Roberts all failing to convert.

Experienced striker Charlie Griffin then hit an upright with a header from a Guthrie corner on the half-hour.

Three minutes later, he opened the scoring when he connected with Guthrie’s free-kick with the faintest of headers.

Before the break, Alex Ferguson saw a headed effort disallowed because of an infringement and after the interval, the game followed a similar pattern, with Chippenham dominating but failing to make the most of their chances.

Alex Lynch made a good save from Ferguson's header following a corner whilst a shot from Griffin went narrowly wide.

Striker Griffin then headed wide from Ferguson's delicate chip whilst a shot from Roberts was deflected wide.

The Bluebirds finally pressed home the issue as nine minutes from time, a cross from substitute Jack Odam again found the lurking Griffin who bundled the ball home from close range to net his third goal in two games.

Two minutes later, Guthrie's cross was only cleared to Roberts on the edge of the area and he thumped the ball past Lynch.

Burnham scored a consolation goal on 86 minutes through Adam Dickens whilst Griffin almost notched his hat-trick but his close range effort was just off target.
