THE brilliant run enjoyed by Clarrie Dunbar’s Ailsa Midwinter and Teresa King in the Over 60s Pairs at the national championships being staged in Nottingham this week is over.

The duo were comprehensively beaten in the semi-finals 29-10 by Wisbech (Cambs) pairing of Carole Quinney and Pauline Ayres who were shock winners in their quarter-final tie on Wednesday evening when defeating Barwell (Leics) 23-13, holders of the O60s title for the past two seasons.

In their game against Wisbech today (Thursday), the Clarrie Dunbar pairing only took the plaudits on three of the 19 ends that were played.

They trailed 9-0 after six ends but won the next two with big counts of four and five to draw level at 9-9 after eight.

However, they lost the next eight ends in a row conceding 15 shots to fall 24-9 adrift after 16. They did manage to pick-up a single on the next end but that was their last taste of success as Wisbech claimed a 29-10 victory when Clarrie Dunbar called a halt after 19 ends.

Wisbech move forward to the final and will play Redcar (Cleveland) who beat Long Sutton (Lincs) 25-9 in the other semi-final.

Earlier in the competition Clarrie Dunbar duo Midwinter and King had beaten Hounslow 18-14 in the last 16 and followed that up with a gritty 23-22 victory over Rivermead (Reading) despite trailing 20-13 after 15 ends.
