MANAGER Mark Collier is certain that Chippenham Town will need to clinch victory in their final two games of the season to have any chance of sneaking in to the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division play-offs.

The Bluebirds romped to a fine 3-0 victory at Cambridge City last night to mark a recovery from their recent seven-match winless run – their win on Thursday night was their second in the space of five days.

Ben Whitehead netted his first Chippenham goal from the penalty spot to see off Cambridge at Westwood Road, with Ollie Taylor and Matt Smith also notching, and the Hardenhuish Park men have a trip to third-placed Redditch United tomorrow and home clash with Paulton Rovers on April 23 left to tackle.

Whilst he is unsure if his team’s resurgence will be enough to rescue a top-five finish, Bluebirds boss Collier is delighted that his troops aren’t allowing their campaign to peter out.

“We’ve got two very difficult games left and you think that we’ll have to win them both, but all we can do is try and do that and see where it takes us. Whether that will be enough or not; I don’t know,” said the Chippenham manager.

“We’ve got a lot of confidence from our second half against Biggleswade (a 3-2 comeback win last Saturday) and we were excellent last night as well.

“We’ll just have to see what happens. Who would have thought Bedworth would beat Kettering last night? No-one. But all we can take care of is ourselves.

“I want us to have a good end to the season. It would have been easy for us to feel sorry for ourselves and just go through the motions for the rest of the season.

“Cambridge play at St Ives, so the pitch is very poor because it gets used doubly, but we managed to deal with that and win in style.”

Defender Leigh Henry, who only signed for Chippenham from Cirencester Town in March, will miss the rest of the season after picking up a two-match ban for his 10th booking of the campaign whilst winger James Guthrie could also not play a part as he continues to struggle with an ankle injury.

Striker Andy Sandell and midfielder Chris Allen are also suspended for tomorrow’s trip to high-flying Redditch, meaning that Ryan Campbell and Scott Bevan are set to come in to Collier’s squad.
