MARK Collier has no intention of reining in Chippenham Town’s licence to thrill, but admits his side’s weaknesses at the back will need to be addressed in the second half of the season.

The Bluebirds underlined their status as the entertainers of the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division with a couple of goals-laden festive encounters as they picked up 3-3 and 2-2 draws with Cirencester Town on Boxing Day and Frome Town on Monday respectively.

The Hardenhuish Park men boast the most prolific scoring record in the division, with 56 goals having gone in during 26 games.

But their back-line is also the most generous in the top eight - barring Frome - the 36 conceded being considerably more than their rivals.

While such fixtures may be easy on the eye, they could be potentially fatal to Town’s promotion hopes, especially with a visit to leaders Leamington, who are seven points ahead of Collier’s men, looming on Saturday.

The manager admits juggling potency going forward with keeping it tight at the back will be a key element of maintaining his side’s challenge between now and April.

“When we set out at the start of the season, it was to be more attack-minded,’’ said the Bluebirds chief (right).

“The chairman (Neil Blackmore) wanted to see us playing attacking football and we’ve been doing that .

“To score three goals away from home (at Cirencester), you should be winning that game and that’s down to people not doing the right jobs at the right time.

“There are decent strikers in this division, who can take advantage of that so it is something we are trying to address.

“We need to be a bit more of a solid outfit and less open.’’ Nevertheless, Chippenham find themselves in excellent shape past the midway point of the campaign and Collier hopes his side’s promotion challenge will be sustained unlike last year, when they fell away with a nine-match winless run through March.

The manager added: “We’re in a good position at this point so we’ve got to be happy with it.

“I’ve been stressing to the players that every single point between now and the end of the season will count in the end, so sometimes a draw is not a bad result.’’
