Robbie beats Borat, but can’t catch Scooby Doo

8:00am Sunday 8th April 2007

ASTHMATIC Robbie Newton has completed the Bath Half Marathon and raised more than £750 for fellow sufferers.

Newton, who plays in goal for Chippenham and District Sunday Football League side Trowbridge Town Supporters' Club, finished the 13-mile race in one hour 49 minutes.

The 24-year-old customer sales supervisor, from Staverton, gave up fast food and alcohol to prepare for the race, and now has his sights set on a full marathon in 2008.

Newton said: "When I crossed the finish line there was a great sense of relief, but I also felt I could do a few more miles.

"I have to say I'm very tempted by the London Marathon now. Maybe I will start training soon."

Newton did not need to take his Ventolin reliever during the race and even had time to conduct a personal battle with two runners in fancy dress.

He said: "I was overtaken by a bloke in a Scooby Doo outfit at the beginning, but I did finish in front of Borat, so I was pleased with that."

Newton is still collecting sponsorship for national charity Asthma UK. To make a donation visit www.justgiving.com/robbie_newton
