STEVE Shipway, manager of Audley Spartans, was a happy man on Sunday afternoon after his team ended their eight-match losing run with a 7-0 victory over fellow strugglers X Change FC, who they beat 1-0 earlier in the season, to claim their only other two-pointer to date. X Change started the match with 10 players but immediately put the Spartans under pressure as they won several early free kicks which were comfortably dealt with by the Spartans defence.
Spartans weathered the early pressure and started to gain the upper hand dominating possession without creating any clear cut chances on goal.
The home team finally got the breakthrough when Steve Shipway played the ball in to Ricky Treweke who, having scored the only goal in the first meeting of the sides, opened the scoring in the reverse match when he calmly slotted the ball home.
A second goal followed shortly afterwards when Treweke held the ball up well for Ryan Hunt to slot home his first goal of the season under the body of the diving X-Change keeper.
Spartans continued to dominate the play but could not manage another goal and went into half time 2-0 up.
The second half started as the first half had ended, with the Spartans continuing to dominate and it didn't take long for Hunt to hit his second of the game with a curling shot in off the inside of the post.
Spartans' fourth goal came from a good passing move which led to Shipway playing in Alan Woodward to side foot in his first of the season.
X-Change changed goalkeepers midway through the second half but couldn't stop the Spartans as they kept their shape and discipline.
And when a Shipway shot was well saved by replacement keeper John Dix, Treweke was on hand to tap in his second of the game.
Spartans substitute Richard Johnson made an immediate impact when he came on in the 60 minute with a fine run and cross for Hunt to complete his hat-trick.
Shortly after, X-Change were reduced to nine men when they lost Shane Goodship through injury but still continued to battle.
Spartans continued to press and had plenty of chances to increase the lead.
The closest they came to that was Shipway who hit the bar on two occasions and Treweke must of thought it wasn't going to be his day as he had two goals ruled out for offside before finally completing his hat trick from another Johnson cross to make it 7-0.
AFC Lyneham 0 Somerford FC 4
GARY Chandler’s Somerford side kept their unbeaten record against AFC Lyneham intact as they claimed a fifth win in six outings against Jason Raven’s side.
Having drawn their earlier meeting 3-3, Lyneham were confident that it would be their turn for victory, but once again Somerford prevailed as they took the spoils courtesy of a 4-0 success.
John Rawlings gave Somerford the lead, an excellent goal from Darren Clarke made it 2-0 before Jason Lovell fired home to give Chandler’s chargers a 3-0 half time lead.
Richard Bright sealed Somerford’s win with the only goal of the second period.
Chippenham West End 5 Mash Tun Villa 2
MASH Tun Villa threw away a 2-0 half time lead as Chippenham West End put on a classy second-half display, helped by some dreadful goalkeeping by Villa’s Richard Hunt to turn the game on its head.
Their victory which was their first in three attempts over Rob Elliott’s side.
Mash Tun took the lead on 10 minutes when Dale Rowland chipped the ball over West End’s keeper Darren Newman.
Rowland doubled Villa lead with a stunning strike from 25 yards.
Having controlled the ball with his knee, he volleyed beyond keeper Newman, who did well to get a hand to the ball but couldn’t keep it out.
If the first half belonged to Villa the second was the West End’s and they got themselves back in the contest when a James Mullhall free kick was headed home by Phil Mellor.
West End were on level terms soon after when keeper Hunt fumbled a back pass from Shaun Bennett and the ball fell to Steve Jenkins who slotted home from close range.
West End took the lead when a long clearance from his own area by Paul Mannings saw keeper Hunt rush out his area to get the ball.
But Mullhall was also giving chase and Hunt decided to retreat back to his goal and in that moment Mullhall chipped the hapless Hunt from an acute angle to give the hosts their 3-2 lead.
Having gone in front, West End were on a high and they soon added a fourth when Chris Jenkins was played in by Tristan Roberts and he drilled home a thunderbolt that any keeper would have had little chance of stopping.
West End’s fifth came from the penalty spot. Phil Mellor was brought down in the area and Mullhall converted from the spot to claim his second of the game and earn the hosts an excellent 5-2 victory.
Corsham Park Rangers 4 Kings Arms (All Cannings) 0
CORSHAM Park Rangers, who were in sixth place prior to kick-off time, swapped places with Kings Arms (All Cannings) following their 4-0 triumph over Jim Wilson’s side who, after winning their opening three games of the season have won just one of the following 10.
Corsham Park were in great form from start to finish and their defence, which restricted their guests to Leafy Lane to just one meaningful shot in the whole of the game, was outstanding.
Lydon Cambourne gave Corsham Park the lead which was doubled by Jake Marshall, who made it 2-0 when he finished off an excellent team move.
Although the hosts dominated Kings Arms they should have had more than their two-goal half time lead to show for their efforts.
Park may have taken their foot of the gas in the second period, but they made the points safe when substitute Kevin Bance made it 3-0 and Bance also had the final say when he netted his second of the morning to give the victors their fifth win of the season.
FC Boroughs v Lavington (Sunday) - pp
LEADERS Lavington (Sunday) remain top of the table despite having their match at FC Boroughs postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Boroughs secretary/manager made the decision of Friday night to call the game off, but had he waited a further 24 hours before making the call he may well have found that his sides pitch at the Worthy’s Malmesbury may have been playable.
Gladstone Rovers 3 Potterne B FC 2
IT was second versus fourth at Sutton Benger where Gladstone Rovers welcomed Potterne B.
And unlike the first meeting of the sides which saw Potterne win 6-3, Gladstone took the points in the reverse match with a victory which saw them move level on points with long-time leaders Lavington (Sunday), who were inactive for a fourth successive weekend.
Potterne took a two-goal lead though goals from Dean Taccuso and Glynn Rowles, but they were pegged back by a double from Robbie Burton - the first being a fine finish and the second coming when he reacted quickest to a loose ball and scrambled it over the line.
Rob Jefferies made it 3-2 before the interval and that was how the scoreline remained as neither side created many clear cut chances in the second half.
