Having had great success in the League’s own Ken Clarke Memorial 6-a-side tournament over the past six years Corsham Centre who have lifted the trophy five times in that time entered a team into the Bromham 6-a-side competition last weekend with team was being managed by Jose Martin.
The team consisted of Gary Banks, Matthew Ralph, Steve Casey, 16 year old Simon Burt, Scott Lye, James Lye, 46-year-old keeper Micky Godsell and Martin himself and at the end of a busy day it was the Centre who came out on top with a thrilling win in the final against a Corsham Town side managed by Mel Gingell.
In the group stages Centre had a perfect record winning four out of four without conceding a goal.
They met ‘Bloaters Boys’ in the quarter finals defeating them 2-0, with an excellent first goal from Steve Casey playing in an un familiar role of centre forward, the second was scored by Gary Banks, who had an impressive performance playing in defence.
They met Bromham in the semi-finals where the lethal Steve Casey calmly nut-megged the goal keeper for the first with Scott Lye scoring number two after good work from Centre’s star man Matthew Ralph.
Centre then met Corsham Town in the final, Simon Gray representing the Town scored a good opener, which was the first goal that Centre keeper Godsell had conceded in the tournament, this remained the score at half time.
An inspirational team talk from manager Martin saw a revitalised Centre equalise through a ferocious James Lye effort.
With a minute remaining, Corsham Town keeper Nick Gingell brought down James Lye in the penalty area, the same player dusted himself down and struck home the penalty to make it 2-1.
This remained the score and a jubilant Jose Martins Centre claimed the cup for the first time.
