FOURTH Division FC Jager booked their placed in the quarter-finals of this season’s Westernsport Trophies-sponsored WG Parr Trophy after beating Division One side Bremhill View Social Club 3-1 at Calne Town FC last night. The match, one of the eight outstanding second round matches which were postponed due to the bad weather before Christmas, was scheduled for Sunday.
But with Bremhill unable to raise a team at the weekend due to a wedding both teams agreed to bring the match forward a few days.
And it the end it was disappointment for the hosts manager Martin Belcher, who was hoping to lift the cup in what is believed to be his final season in charge of the club. On a bitterly cold night under the floodlights, Jager started the brighter and looked to pin Bremhill View back with their attacking formation.
Jager almost took the lead on 10 minutes when striker Nick Ridout hit the post from eight yards following a slick team move.
Jager didn't have to wait long for their opening goal and it came on 15 minutes when Barry Holloway played through James Eatough and Eatough laid the ball off for Ridout who, in turn, fired the ball into the far bottom corner and in off the post for 1-0.
It was only another 10 minutes before it was 2-0.
Another well-worked move saw Lee Jackson score a similar goal to Ridout’s opener for his second in two games.
Jager now looked comfortable and debutant keeper Nick Evans barely had a shot to save as Jager coasted to a 2-0 half-time lead.
Ten minutes into the second half, Jager were 3-0 up.
Ridout was bundled over in the box by Gavin Cox and he picked himself up to score the resulting penalty.
As in the past Jager appeared to feel the game was won and Bremhill View now started to look dangerous for the first time in the game.
They abandoned their defensive mentality and were rewarded on 65 minutes as a well-worked free kick was eventually finished well by Nick Haigh.
Jager had the better chances of the second half, Ridout and Emilio Menghini guilty of some glaring misses.
But Bremhill were retaining the ball better than the Melksham side and if only for some better finishing, they could have clawed at least one more goal back.
Jager introduced subs Neil Holloway and Adam Potter for the last quarter and the fresh legs helped them hold on for a place in the quarter finals.
