TROWBRIDGE Wanderers manager John Phillips thinks that his side should be more than happy with their start to life in the Wiltshire League.

Wanderers moved up to seventh in the Premier Division last weekend as they bounced back to winning ways with a 4-2 win at last season’s league and cup champions Southbrook.

Wes McBarnett netted a brace whilst Adam Mercer and Jordan Pinder, who fired home after seeing his initial penalty kick saved, also got themselves on the scoresheet.

“If someone had offered us this kind of start at the beginning of the season, I would have taken it,” said Phillips.

“I was on holiday for the first two games of the season and we did lose them but I don’t think that my being away had any bearing on that – we’re a brand-new team.

“What we’ve managed to do is deliver on everything that we offered the players and the chairman and the management team have helped me out so much. Robbie Simmonds and Chris Carr (assistant managers) have been fantastic so far.

“We’ve got Trowbridge Town in the (Senior KO) Cup in a few weeks and the players are itching for that one but it’s all been about keeping them concentrated on the league games in the meantime.”

Elsewhere, second-from-bottom Westbury United Reserves were unable to build on last week’s victory over fellow strugglers Vale of Pewsey as they were humbled 6-0 by Wilts Calne Town.

Corsham Town Reserves’ clash with Melksham Town Reserves last Friday evening was postponed.
