FROME Town manager Adrian Foster was ‘annoyed’ by the overly-aggressive approach of Welton Rovers as they battled against his side in the Somerset Premier Cup this week.

Foster’s men required extra-time and a superb hat-trick from substitute Ben Thomson to scrape past their Toolstation League opponents 3-2 on Tuesday night, but the Badgers Hill boss lost Jonny Lynn, Brandon Mundy and Mario Mateus to injury in Midsomer Norton, with Jack Vallis also receiving a straight red card.

“I don’t understand these sides. When they come up against a team from a higher level, they just want to kick them and leave their foot in,” said the Frome boss.

“They didn’t want us to turn up and steamroller them at their place but these lads have still got to get up for work the next day and the referee didn’t control the game at all – it just annoys me.

“I rested some players and had them on the bench but I had to bring them on. I had three lads get injured and Mario had to stay on when he should have come off.

“It’s important that we got a win though. A win is good in any competition.”

Welton’s Mark Reynolds nodded the home side in front before Vallis reacted angrily to a challenge from Rovers’ Anthony Conradi, with both players sent off.

Half-time substitute Thomson curled home a left-footed strike to level things up but Chris Peck struck early in extra-time to put the hosts 2-1 up.

But Thomson hit back as he produced a carbon copy of his first goal before the striker netted the winner at the death.

This weekend, the shoe will be on the other foot as Frome attempt to take down Conference South high-fliers Boreham Wood in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.

“I loved playing against sides supposedly better than you – I absolutely loved it,” said Foster.

“If we get a win against a side that are at the top of the league above, that could kick-start our season, so we’ve got to believe we can do it.

“If I hear any negativity, I won’t be happy about it.”

Last Saturday, the Robins were beaten 3-0 at Chesham United in the league, which was once again rebranded the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division this week.
