LESS than a week after Westbury United manager Adam Collington handed in his resignation, chairman Paul Brickley has also announced that he will be stepping down.

United revealed last Friday that Collington, who took over in May following the departure of previous boss Matty Bown, had left his post prior to Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by fellow strugglers Roman Glass St George in the Toolstation League First Division.

However in the wake of that news, Brickley, who used to be manager before becoming chairman, has revealed he will also be taking a break from the club.

Stepping in to the chairman’s seat will be Matt Bright, who is currently with the Westbury Youth set-up.

Brickley, who has been assisting caretaker manager Mark Hurkett with the first team since Collington’s departure, will still be a face around the club and help with the pitch but felt the time was right to inject some new life into the club.

“I feel the club needs a new direction. I have been there for 12 or 13 years and it has gone a bit stale," he said.

“I approached Matt and I was going to let him take over from January but that has come forward a bit.

“I was waiting to get everyone together and it just so happens that Adam resigned a couple of days before I was hoping to have the meeting.

“Adam spoke to me and he just told me that he found it too much like hard work and he wasn’t getting the commitment from the players.

“I hope the club goes back more to how it was when I was manager and the club was doing well.

“It has definitely dropped off and the commitment is not there.

“I love the club and I will still be involved, it is just a shame it has had this drop off period, where there is no budget.

“I think the time is right for me, no one can question how hard I have worked at it, it just needs a change.”

New chairman Bright is expected to have talks with caretaker manager Hurkett about his future over this weekend, but the temporary boss is just focusing on getting a side out this weekend.

“I was helping out a bit so when Steve Seals left four or five weeks ago, I came as Adam’s assistant – now I’m in this position,” said Hurkett.

“Along with Paul Brickley and his experience, we’ll be making sure that we get a side out for the foreseeable future.

“I don’t know too much about why Adam left at all – whether it was work commitments or not, I really don’t know.

“We’re just hoping to keep things ticking over and seeing what happens next.”
