HAVING beaten Taunton & District League top dogs Locomotives FC 5-0 in the previous round of the Somerset Junior Cup, Chris Birleson’s Freshford United side will think that the cup gods are against them as they were paired with Yeovil & District League high flyers Somerton FC, who arrived at Brown’s Park with an identical record to that of their hosts of 10 wins from 10 games.

With both teams looking to maintain their 100 per cent start to the campaign it was little surprise that the tie was played at a frantic pace. But following a heavy challenge from the Somerton keeper on United’s Mark Gerrish, that left him with a broken leg, the match was abandoned on 84 minutes with Somerton winning 2-1.

Somerton has taken a 2-0 half-time lead, which was halved by Steve Roddy early in the second period. With Freshford starting to gain the upper hand they were dealt a cruel blow with the injury to Gerrish that held the game up for a long period while they waited for the ambulance.

With the light running out, the referee signaled an early end to the game.

Somerset FA have announced that the match will be replayed this coming Saturday.
