LEADERS Melksham Town suffered just a fourth league defeat of the season when they went down at Street on Tuesday night.

Darren Perrin’s side were left to rue a pair of missed penalties at the Tannery Ground.

Town were actually awarded three spot-kicks, with Dan Kovas putting them in front after Gary Higdon had already been denied.

Efforts from Street’s Harry Baker and Dale Hunt then turned the game on its head, but Melksham still had the chance to snatch a draw at the death.

The visitors were awarded a third penalty of the evening in the final minute but a superb save from Ben Dancey kept out Dan King’s effort.

Boss Perrin admitted Melksham had no one to blame but themselves for the defeat.

“I don’t think I’ve been involved in a game like that before in all my years in football,” he said. “Wasted opportunities is the best way to describe it.

“We were in control of the game and, to be fair, Street are a good side but they only had two shots all night.

“If you miss two of three penalties you don’t really deserve to get anything. We have only got ourselves to blame.”

Perrin has been cautious over a potential blip throughout Melksham’s excellent start and will be working hard to get his troops back on track.

“Whenever I speak I speak from the heart and tell the truth,” said Perrin.

“I’ve said we will get caught out and it’s not me being negative or downplaying it, it’s that I know what is realistic for us.

“I believe we are a top-six club and no more than that at the moment. That doesn’t mean we won’t try our best to try to exceed that.

“The players have done ever so well this year so maybe we’ll let them have that one.

“All we can do now is try to get back to where we were three or four weeks ago.”
