SHAUN Gardiner believes his mantra at Westbury United is working despite defeat at home to Hengrove Athletic.

Gardiner is still only four games into his reign at Meadow Lane and although he has picked up a victory in that time, they remain in the bottom three.

Two quick-fire goals put Hengrove in control on Saturday before Nathan Hallet-Young gave United hope before the break.

But Westbury were then stunned by another Hengrove double and only reduced the deficit through a late Jordan Matthews penalty.

“We are getting there slowly. I’m not happy to have lost but things don’t happen overnight,” said Gardiner.

“I’ve brought in four new players and am still speaking to a few more. Things will change but it takes time.

“We seem to be playing the top-of-the-table teams at the moment, whereas we need to focus on beating the teams around us.”

Westbury face a trip to Almondsbury UWE this weekend.
