ALEX Ferguson got the only goal of the game as Chippenham Town edged the New Year’s Day derby against local rivals Frome Town.

Both sides have been short of form of late, with the victory being Chippenham’s first in the league since early November.

The deciding moment came midway through the first half when Frome keeper Ed Baldy could not hold onto Michael Pook’s drive from the edge of the area and Ferguson was on hand to lash the ball home.

Town boss Mark Collier said: “I think it was a fair result.

“We were disappointed it was only 1-0 at half-time as we’d had some good chances to score more.

“We had to make changes because of three injuries around half-time but I thought we defended really strongly in the second half and our keeper didn’t really have to make a save.

“On the back of some bad results recently it’s nice to get the win. It was an ugly win but we’ll take the three points however they come.

“We haven’t played badly of late, in fact I think we’ve played better in some games than we did today but this is the game we won.”

Ferguson (groin), Luke Ballinger (hamstring) and James Guthrie (knee) all limped off in a 20-minute spell either side of half-time at Hardenhuish Park and Collier is now sweating over their fitness ahead of the visit of Biggleswade Town on Saturday.
