WITH Division Two leaders Westbury Town missing out on a game due to their match at Bratton against United FC being postponed to a waterlogged pitch, it meant that if Holt could avoid defeat away at an in-form Heytesbury, Ben Hogg’s side would move back to the top of the standings for the first time since November.

However, a third 1-0 victory for the hosts in four games denied Hogg’s team pole position.

The win for Heytesbury means that the villagers can now be considered along with Holt, Westbury Town and White Horse to be serious promotion candidates.

Holt made a brisk start and only an excellent stop from the hosts keeper Sam Spratt denied Zack Manna on four minutes.

Heytesbury had the ball in the net on eight minutes but Bradley Edwards goal was ruled out for offside. The home team then went close again on 30 minutes with Leigh Kennedy flashing a shot just wide of the target.

A minute later Holt were awarded a free kick, Natty Mills saw his effort hit the underside of the bar before being turned to safety by keeper Spratt.

The keeper was called into action five minutes later when he produced a brilliant one handed stop to keep out a Jed Osborne free kick.

As the game flowed from end to end the deadlock was finally broken in the 61st minute, great interplay between Matthew Hyde and Bradley Edwards resulted in the later sending a cross to Leigh Kennedy who planted home what proved to be the winning goal in a highly competitive game which was played in a great spirit and well refereed by 17-year-old Megan Fear.

Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves and local rivals Trowbridge Rangers met at Lambrok Playing fields where the former were looking to avenge their 2-1 loss from early September, but like then it was Rangers who came out on top as they coasted to a convincing 7-2 success.

Goals from Will Jacomb and Will Stead put Rangers 2-0 before Mike Ritson scored from the penalty spot to reduce the arrears for Wanderers. Bradley Butcher’s goal gave Rangers a 3-1 interval lead.

Cameron Thomas and a second for Will Stead extended Rangers lead to 5-1 and although Jamie Dennison netted a debut goal for Wanderers it was to be in vain as a third from Stead saw him complete a deserved treble and a second for Will Jacomb saw him make up Rangers' tally.

White Horse would have expected to beat relegation threatened Bradford United Reserves, however their 2-1 success over Ross Hatter’s side was a lot closer than they would have expected it too be.

Bradford held out for 40 minutes against Allan Clarke’s side but went in 1-0 down after Kane Scott headed in a Dale Rowland cross to give the hosts the lead.

After the break Bradford got themselves back on level terms on 70 minutes, Jack Bristow scoring from the penalty spot after White Horse keeper Andy Ladd had conceded a foul.

With 10 minutes remaining Dale Rowland hit what proved to be the winning goal for White Horse when he hooked in a Jack Holdway cross to earn his team a nervy 2-1 win.

In a windswept match at Lye Playing Field, Calne Eagles came from 1-0 down at half time to defeat Worton & Cheverell 2-1 to all book their place in the division for next season while leaving their hosts in jeopardy.

With the wind at their backs in the first half, Worton gradually started to control the game.

They took a deserved lead after only 20 minutes when pacy winger Kieran Dickinson outpaced the Calne back four and finished superbly past goalkeeper Andy Windsor. However, despite dominating possession during the first half Worton struggled to create clear cut chances because of Calne’s organised and gritty defending.

At the start of the second half, despite playing into the wind, Worton continued to be the better team and actually missed two guilt edged chances to extend their lead.

After 49 minutes veteran striker Dave Close fired wide from 10 yards out after being set up by strike partner Martin Dickinson. Moments later Luke Hamblen also fired wide when he broke clean though on goal.

Somewhat against the run of play Calne equalised with 20 minutes remaining when their playmaker Russell Driver was fouled just inside the Worton penalty area. Russell Driver took the spot-kick himself, but was somewhat lucky when his penalty was saved by James Baggott.

However, the keeper was unable to stop the ball from bouncing away from him and spinning back over the goal line.

With only 15 minutes left on the clock Calne took the lead when centre back Ned Edney scored his first goal for the club when he powerfully headed home a Russell Driver corner kick.

In the closing stages Calne winger Dan Brown was desperately unlucky not to make the game safe when he lobbed goalkeeper James Baggott but the ball rebounded off the bar to safety.

Worton also created a lot of pressure and might have equalised twice through Dave Close, who was denied by a good save from Andy Windsor and then also by a great last ditch tackle from full back Matt Bowery.

In the end Calne Eagles hung on to claim a 2-1 win, that on this occasion probably owed as much to their battling spirit than their quality of play.
