MANAGER Wayne Kibble says Malmesbury Victoria will not be overreacting to their 1-0 Corsham Print Cup defeat away at Wroughton.

Malmesbury missed out on a place in the quarter-finals of the competition after failing to make the most of a series of good chances at the Weir Field, with the home side getting the only goal of the game in the first half.

That was Malmesbury’s first defeat in all competitions since late October, a run that has seen them climb up to fifth in the league table with games in hand on all the teams above them.

And for that reason Kibble and his squad are not feeling too downbeat about their cup exit.

“If we were going to slip up at some point and pick up a bad result – and it would have been very difficult to keep this good run going right until the end of the season – I’m pleased it was in the cup,” said Kibble.

“Of course we are disappointed not to be involved anymore but we certainly aren’t too down heartened as the good thing is it hasn’t affected our league position.

“We still have a lot of league games to catch up on and let’s hope we can go on another good run now like we were before.

“With the position we are in at the moment it’s in our hands to finish right up there.

“If we can win the games we’ve got left we’ll give ourselves a really good chance of doing that but whether we can win the league or not, that comes down to games other than our own.”

Malmesbury had plenty of chances to win Saturday’s cup clash themselves but were regularly found wanting in front of the Wroughton goal.

Kibble added: “If we were still playing now we probably still wouldn’t have scored.

“We did everything we could and we hit the bar but it was just one of those days.

“That’s not to say they didn’t deserve something out of the game because they had their chances too, but it’s just we created a hell of a lot more.

“The goal came midway through the first half. Our defence stopped to call for an offside but it wasn’t given and their striker managed to get to the ball just before the keeper to knock it in.”

In league action, leaders Ludgershall Sports edged past Corsham Town Reserves 3-2 and are now eight points clear of Melksham Town Reserves, who had no game at the weekend.

Supermarine Sports romped to an impressive 3-0 success at struggling Westbury United Reserves, while Trowbridge Town triumphed 2-1 at Corsham Town Reserves. Finally, Wilts Calne Town and Southbrook shared an uninspiring 0-0 draw.
